Protesters challenge controversial practice of dissecting animals in science class

HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. - The protest barely qualified as one.

Six staunch PETA supporters, including one inside a cat costume and another dressed as a pig, paced the sidewalk outside High School District 113 in Highland Park. Their goal: to push the district to end animal dissection in science classes at Highland Park and Deerfield high schools.

Modest as it was, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals rally highlighted an issue that has long raised controversy but seems to be gaining increased attention: whether the dissection of frogs, pigs or other animals in school science classes is appropriate, particularly when digital alternatives are becoming refined and abundant.
