BEAUTY AND THE BEASTIES

In a studio filled with light and quiet endeavour in the Glasgow suburb of Anniesland, screen printer Gavin Thomson is working glossy black ink across Dutch gold leaf applied to handmade paper. Coming to life on the 20-metre print table is a pattern called ‘Golden Oriole’, and a wallpaper that will sell for almost $2,000 per three-metre panel.

In a separate showroom is a forest of fabric, 4.2-metre drops of fine Kirkcaldy linen in myriad patterns, colour that’s rich with risk, and with names such as ‘Marble Gum’, ‘Mosquito’ and ‘Graffiti Horizon’.
