Did you know that you have 206 bones in your body? And all of them play a vital role. But, during and after the menopause, women lose essential bone mass or density, which can play havoc with your health. “This is why one in three menopausal women will suffer osteoporosis compared with one in five men as we age,” says pharmacologist Dr Omar Milhem. “It happens because oestrogen plays a pivotal role in regulating bone balance. When oestrogen is withdrawn from the female body during menopause, this increases an internal inflammatory response to break down more bone at an accelerated rate.”
