Your health questions… EXPERT ANSWERS

Q WHY AM I SO TIRED ALL THE TIME?

w&h GP Dr Rosemary Leonard says: GPs are asked this so often that it’s abbreviated to “TATT” in patients’ notes. It is always important to check for an underlying medical reason, such as a low iron level or an underactive thyroid. Undiagnosed diabetes is also a common cause of fatigue, especially in those who are overweight, so blood tests are a must.

Depression often causes lethargy, which is made worse by disrupted sleep, and constantly feeling anxious can also sap energy levels.

In most cases, chronic fatigue is your body’s way of telling you to slow down. Most people need around 8 hours’ sleep, so have a few early nights, eat a wellbalanced diet, and avoid alcohol – this often work wonders for energy levels.
