The 2020s will see the rise of the quantum computer

Revolutionary is a word that often gets overused. I’ve been guilty of it myself. But if there’s one thing in the world of computing that deserves being described as such, it’s a fully functional quantum computer.

What is a quantum computer? The functions of a classical computer are based around the use of. A sufficiently powerful quantum computer can potentially make use of thousands or more qubits to perform calculations that are simply impossible on any classical computer, no matter how powerful it is. The physics challenges are being ticked off at an increasing rate, and we are moving into the realm of the engineering challenges. Several companies have low level functional quantum computers already. In fact Google claims that its 53-qubit processor was able to perform a task in 200 seconds that would take thousands of years on a classical supercomputer.
