Although not subscribing to any particular “style,” the distinctive and playful work of Melbourne-based (but Tasmanian at heart) Austin Maynard Architects (AMA) comes from a consistent approach to thinking about design. The resulting architecture – predominantly new houses and alterations and additions to date – is clearly driven by ideas. Unorthodox concepts are fully explored in order to create something unexpected, steadily grounded in a response to brief, site and context. Co-director and founder of AMA Andrew Maynard explains that when presenting new projects to clients he’ll tell them, “We’ve fulfilled your brief, but we’re pretty confident it’s not exactly what you expect.” Mark Austin, co-director since 2009, adds,
