What’s it all about, Alfie?
FOR FIVE SEASONS, GOTHAM EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS, Danny Cannon and Bruno Heller, left their lives in London behind for New York. It was there that the pair shook up the DC playbook with Gotham, crafting a series around the revisionist histories for some of Batman’s most iconic baddies. While the series wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, Gotham certainly swung for the fences with its intention to air out those tired, “sacrosanct” storylines to find something new to tell in the well-worn mythology.
Emboldened by the whole experiment, Cannon and Heller are at it again, dipping back into Batman’s history for the inspiration of their new series, Pennyworth. Yes, it’s about that Pennyworth: Alfred, the stuffy yet loyal butler who serves the Wayne family and mentors the young, orphaned Bruce. Except this series has no interest in portraying that guy.
Instead, rewinds the clock to the ’60s, when a young, sexy and extremely charming Alfred (Jack Bannon) has recently retired from the SAS and is looking to forge his path in a London that’s been painted with the broad strokes of a DC brush.
