Most people will experiences anxiety at some point in their life. In fact, mixed anxiety and depression is the most common mental disorder in Britain, affecting around one in seven of us, says mental health charity No Panic. And women are almost twice as likely to be diagnosed with anxiety disorders as men. But it’s when this feeling of unease, worry or fear begins to dominate our lives that it’s important to take action.
‘It’s normal for people to feel anxious, but nervousness can become extreme, with psychological symptoms including feelings that you are going. ‘Physical symptoms include tingling in the hands and feet, dizziness, breathing difficulty, nausea and perspiration.’ The reaction happens as we perceive a threat and our body responds with a rush of cortisol. ‘Anxiety is different from stress, as stress is a response to a specific trigger. When the stressor – such as financial pressures or relationship issues – is removed, so is the stress. With anxiety, symptoms persist and sometimes the stressor isn’t identifiable,’ says Dr Paschos.
