FUNNY YOU SHOULD ASK

Dear FYSA,

My agent just sold my novel in a two-book deal—yay! Here’s the thing: This has always been a dream of mine, and my advance is very healthy, but, I love my other career—my “day job” as it were. But I am worried that will make it look like I am not serious about this. Tell me the truth—will I be taken seriously as an author by my agent and publisher if I keep my day job?

Sincerely, Working 9 to 5 to 9

Dear Niner,

Living in that Venn diagram collision of vocation meeting passion meeting occupation is not something everyone can claim, but when we can, it literally makes everything better. You are preaching to the choir—even if I won the Mega Millions tomorrow I would be here in the office the day after representing my clients (maybe the day after the day after, because, ).
