NAVIGATING in Nirvana

Beneath the sea is a parallel universe. Silent, except for the slow, rhythmic sound of my breathing. More extraordinary colours placed together than I could ever imagine on earth, with a sensation of weightlessness and perfect balance as my buoyancy becomes just right.

I swim into vast shoals of vivid yellow-backed fusiliers, past huge Gorgonian fans, to spot a nudibranch on the seemingly infinite wall, where a lionfish hovers. A hawksbill turtle glides below me. Out in the big blue, I notice a solitary starry toadfish.

Untamed beauty in the Indian Ocean around Madagascar has me mesmerised.

CAN LIFE GET ANY BETTER?

I emerge from the water in my wetsuit – like a James Bond girl – to climb onto the lower deck of our motorised catamaran, where Noel, our smiling Malagasy crew member, hands me a caipirinha. Can life get any better?
