The iconic proclamation by astronaut Neil Armstrong as he became the first man to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969 will forever be etched in the history books: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
That “small step” 50 years ago represented almost a decade of ambition, imagination and scientific achievement, continuing the enduring US theme of exploring new frontiers.
There was also the shadow of the Cold War, with the Space Race embodying a more cynical exercise in military and technological superiority that saw the US and Soviet Union vying for dominance.
