Way back in 1970, when all this was fields and everything had a sepia tint, Joni Mitchell was lamenting the nature of how ‘they paved paradise and put up a parking lot’. The song in question, Big Yellow Taxi, made a bold and pioneering statement about environmental concerns, about deforestation and the pursuit of human convenience over the beauty of nature, although as Alan Partridge subsequently pointed out in the 1990s, this act of town planning was ‘a measure which actually would have alleviated traffic congestion on the outskirts of paradise’. So there you go, there’s always a counterpoint of view.
