Football’s impotence

Coronavirus has infected much of the planet at a venomous pace. And along the way it has also exposed the impotence of football’s governing bodies when society is in crisis.

UEFA has been accused of being slow off the mark as COVID-19 accelerated across Europe. With hindsight, it appears naive merely to have prohibited pre-match handshakes before 90 minutes of physical contact, to permit Atletico Madrid and their fans to fly to Liverpool, and to permit Atalanta to go ahead with their game against Valencia.

But no one else knew any better. Consider all
