Havoc Hall in North Yorkshire: the name alone would make you want to visit. It sounds as if it has issued from the pen of Emily Brontë or Stella Gibbons, all stone mullioned windows, thick ivy and menacing crows circling overhead. But put away your Gothic fantasies, for the house was originally built in the 1930s under a different name. As the hall’s current owners, David and Maggie Lis explain, it was the previous owners who extended the house to its present size and chose to rename it Havoc Hall, because as well as embarking upon considerable building work, they also had six young children.
