The first note was hand-delivered early on a summer Sunday, before birdsong.
She found it lying on the mat by the front door when she went downstairs to make her customary cuppa.
It was in a buff envelope with M scrawled on the front. M for Mary, she assumed and took it into the kitchen to open.
The single sheet of paper was laid out like a blackmail note, but a blackmail note with a difference. Not capitals cut from newspapers but fancy letters, each one carefully glued on to the paper – a calligraphic work of art.
‘He’s obviously stalking you. Maybe we should tell the police’
