WELLNESS TRAVEL One Solution to Overtourism

According to a study conducted by Euromonitor, by 2020, twenty countries will see an additional 121 million tourist arrivals, while the remaining fifty-nine countries will receive around 72 million.

Gloria Guevara, the CEO of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) warns of the problems caused by that concentration. “The top 20 country destinations will add more arrivals by 2020 than the rest of the world combined - fourty-six percent of all travellers go to just 100 destinations.”

Many first-time globetrotters want to see the highlights—the Mona Lisa in Paris, the Ginza in Tokyo, the canals of Venice. In other words, the preponderance of new travellers are treading familiar and crowded tourism routes. Other factors contributing to the exponential growth in international tourism include:

• demographic shifts (millennials love spending their money on experiences)

• new emerging travel markets

• convenience and improved connectivity

• travel options designed to fit a wide range of budgets

All of these factors contribute to the growing problem of overtourism.
