The average American has a one in nine chance of developing diabetes. According to the estimates, about 34.2 million American adults have a diabetes diagnosis, and 1.5 million people are newly diagnosed each year. Alarmingly, one in five people with the condition are unaware that they are living with diabetes. Type 2 diabetes accounts for up to 95% of all diabetes diagnoses. In addition, 88 million adults have prediabetes (a condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes), with about 70% developing type 2 diabetes over time.
