This sharp pain in the abdomen while exercising often occurs when we haven’t warmed up properly or have eaten too close to exercising. ‘A stitch while running is caused by internal organs moving downwards as your foot hits the ground at the same time as the diaphragm moves upwards as you breathe out,’ says Nick Dunn, personal trainer and triathlon coach.
✢ FIX IT
Stop running, breathe normally and rub the area until it subsides. Bending over as much as possible also help, as it stretches your diaphragm, advises Nick.
