Born in Palmerston North in 1954, Belk moved to Tauranga with his family in 1969. The glittering harbour waters proved irresistible and he was soon out sailing his MkII Moth.
A friend’s father was building the Alan Mummerydesigned, 14m centreboard motorsailer and Belk became one of her crew for local racing and the 1975 Auckland to Noumea race. He also crewed on the Laurie Davidson-designed 13.7m in coastal racing and the 1977 Auckland to Suva race. “A
