INDEPENDENT OPERATORS SPEAK OUT

Radio Ink: How is business for you in 2020?

Kristin Cantrell: We started the year out strong. A bit bumpy in our newest markets — Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, and Elmira, New York — as we were going through our transitions. January had our heritage stations seeing increases of 5% to 27%. Then the virus hit, and the majority of our stations are in Pennsylvania and New York, so it was a hot spot for COVID.

April was the worst month, off 41%, with New York being the hardest hit. We’ve improved every month since then, by about 10% per month. We anticipate June will be down 27%, and we’re projecting July to be down 10%- 15%. Considering how hard the industry was hit, we are grateful that we did not see greater declines in revenue.

Ed Levine: “Cautiously optimistic” sums up the business environment for us at Galaxy. Assuming April was the bottom, we have seen sequential double-digit improvement each month since. We think we can continue and enhance that improvement in the second half with the return of Syracuse University Athletics and New York Yankees baseball. Our events division is slowly coming back online with some new events that are perfectly in sync with our COVID world.

Tomas Martinez: Believe it or not, even with all the cancellations and lower national revenues, we are flat compared to 2019.
