The Grand COFFEE MAKER THE HOWARD SHULTZ STORY
Howard D. Schultz was born on July 19, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of three, he moved with his family to the Bayview housing project in Canarsie, southeast Brooklyn. Schultz is a born athlete, leading the home basketball court and school football field. In 1970, he escaped from Canarsie to Northern Michigan University on a football scholarship. After Schultz received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Communications from Northern Michigan University in 1975, he found a job as an equipment salesman for Hammarplast, a company that sold European coffee machines in the United States. In the early 1980s, when Schultz was promoted to sales director, he noticed that the coffee machine he sold to a small business in Seattle, Washington (then called Starbucks Coffee Tea and Spice Company) sold considerably more than he would sell to the big department store Macy’s. “Every month, every quarter, these numbers were going
