TREASURY BLOCKS R800M IN FUNDS

Treasury has withheld the remaining equitable share and conditional grants for the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro in the Eastern Cape over the legality of the appointment of acting municipal manager Mvuleni Mapu because of serious charges he once faced.

Between R800 million and R1.2 billion had been due to the metro for the remainder of this financial year, but Treasury has taken a hard line, setting a precedent for municipalities countrywide that have been found to ignore due process and compliance with the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA).

In a letter Treasury sent to the metro on Wednesday,
