I’m the original couch potato, and although I wasn’t overweight, I smoked, drank, didn’t exercise and ate rubbish. My then best friend who by stark contrast was a competitive athlete, despaired. At any opportunity, she tried to encourage me to stop smoking and regularly gave me a guest pass to her gym, in the hope that it’d rub off. It didn’t.

Despite the fact that I didn’t need to lose weight, I dieted constantly by counting calories; I knew the calories in pretty much everything and stuck rigidly to 1,000 per day. Except of course when a boozy night out or three, would lower my resolve
