As the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge stepped into the Queen’s shoes last week to host the Ukrainian President and First Lady at Buckingham Palace, they took another major step in cementing their position as the royal family’s new power couple.
The day before Prince William launched his biggest and most ambitious project to date – the £50m Earthshot Prize – he and Kate welcomed President Volodymyr Zelensky and his wife Olena to the Throne Room in the first royal event at the palace since lockdown, smiling broadly as they sat side by side on an ornate gold sofa, Kate’s cornflower-blue dress reflecting the colours of the Ukrainian flag.
With the Queen isolating at Windsor Castle, William and Kate looked at ease taking on her diplomatic duties on the visit, which saw the President sign a political, free-trade and strategic-partnership agreement with Prime Minister Boris Johnson at Number Ten, Downing Street.
