Summary:Such an adorable story about a cute kitten seeing a full moon. While the audience knows it is only a moon in the sky, the kitty thinks it is a bowl of milk and goes to great lengths to catch it. Personal Reaction: I really liked Kitten's First Full Moon, however, it kind of lacked excitement. I know that in the stroy the kitty takes on tons of funny adventures, but I feel as if there could be more making the story a little less of a dull and quick read for kids. However, I did like the repititious "Poor Kitten" at the end of every other page. That provides the teacher with the opportunity to do something to keep classroom's attention. For instance, "When I tap my head, I want you to say..." Overall, would this be my first choice to use when considering books? No. But maybe a great, fast, book to read to kill time.Classroom Extension: Children could draw and write about a time where they thought one thing looked like another. For example, thinking that a quarter moon resembled a fingernail, or dirt looking like cinnamon.

A simple story with simple illustrations, this book is beautiful. Keven Henkes tells the story of a kitten who is enchanted by a big moon in the sky.I think it would be cool to have students count up all the different circle shapes they can find in this book. There are circles everywhere! Even on the endpapers! I love the repetition of the shapes. I think it's neat that this book is so effective without color. We've got our night, our moon, our bowl of milk, our flowers, and our white kitten.

This, thus far, is the only Caldecott book that I use for story time. It is a wonderful, quiet story, beautifully illustrated (a book in black and white that I love? What?) and children love to hear it read aloud. One of my favorites.

We read this book one time for the moon festival at Sunday School. We found it again today at the library and I was surprised to find that my preschooler remembered the story from when we'd read it about 2 months ago. She then proceeded to ask to read it three times in a row. With its simple, evocative drawings and a protagonist it's easy to root for, I find this book very pleasant to read over and over again.

Summary: A cute story of a little kitten that thinks the moon is a very large saucer of milk. The kitten tries many ways to get to the saucer of milk only to jump straight in to the lake and stagger back home finding a saucer of milk waiting for him on the front porch.Personal Reaction: This is a cute story about things aren’t always what they seem. The kitten worked very hard to get to the milk that wasn’t even there. It also shows how imagination can work against us when we see things that aren’t there such as shadows on the wall at night.Classroom Extension:1. This would be a great book to read to students when talking about reflections, or mirrors. 2. It might be a fun activity to have students to a mirror drawing by looking into a mirror and tracing on to the paper what they see in the mirror without looking at the paper. Obviously not for the very young elementary school students but fourth and fifth graders might be up for a challenge.

Kitten's First Full Moon is a book about a kitten who sees a full moon and she thinks the moon is a bowl of milk. She does everything she can think of like, climbing to the tallest tree, jumping off her porch, to try and reach the moon. She finally gives up and when she returns home there was a bowl of milk waiting for her on the porch. This story was fun and the pictures were wonderful. It also kept me wondering what the kitten was going to do next so she could get a hold of the moon. I would use this book as a read aloud for my students. The pictures were wonderful and I could involve the students on guessing what the kitten was going to do next.

This is a cute book about a kitten who see's her first ever full moon. She thinks that it is a full bowl of milk so she tries everything that she can to reach it but she never can. She goes through different ways to reach the moon, but she isn't successful. She goes home in defeat and she sees that there is a bowl of milk waiting for her at home. I would use this in the classroom to introduce myself to my students. I love cats, and this cat shows that she will never give up on something that she wants, and although things don't work out in her favor the first couple of times, she still gets what she is working for in the end. Genre: realistic fiction?

Kitten’s First Full Moon tells the story of a little kitten experiencing her first full moon. Kitten notices the round white moon and imagines it to be a bowl of fresh milk. As the night progresses, Kitten gets into some mischief while trying to catch the big bowl and lap up some milk. Kitten experiences disappointment, feels fearful, tumbles from high places, and has an unlucky encounter with a pond. Finally, the night is at an end and Kitten finds a bowl of milk, not in the sky, but on the porch. The illustrations are black and white pencil drawings. The book won the Caldecott Medal in 2005.

This book is about a young, adventurous kitten in search of a bowl of milk. The kitten has many mishaps along the road while trying to find that elusive bowl of milk.I can relate to this story because I have two cats of my own who absolutely love milk and will go searching just about anywhere in my house when they smell it.In the classroom I would have the students draw and color their own picture of a kitten, or maybe of their own pet at home, looking for some milk.

More of Kevin Henkes' fantastic illustrations, and a very charming story about a kitten who thinks the full moon in the sky is a bowl of milk, and how she tries to get it. It's fun to read aloud and the pictures and text capture the silliness of a kitten.

This book is about a small kitten that believed the moon to be a bowl of milk. It tried its best to get to the bowl of milk, but no matter what the kitten done, it could not reach the bowl of milk. The kitten finally came home to find a bowl of milk on the porch. It was happy and content. I think this shows how determined young children can be when they set their mind to something. They have a one track mind. In the classroom, I would have the children tell me something they wanted and talk about the lengths they would go to get it. We could even pick something they would like as a class and write our own story together. The children could then draw the pictures to illustrate the story.

Kitten is full of wonder and excitement because she believes she sees a bowl of milk in the sky. After many attempts to achieve the bowl of milk and failing she is dishearten and heads back home. By the time kitten got home she had something exciting waiting for her on the porch, a bowl of milk! I really enjoyed reading this book. This book would be good to share when incorporating the moon and stars. In the classroom, I would have the children draw a picture of their version of the story whether they want to draw kitten, moon, or the sky. Also, for another activity the children can make moons out of paper plates.

Delightful! A great reminder that when we’re little and we need help from everyone to feed us and keep us alive — if we have a loving family, *that’s* where we’ll find our “bowl of milk.” ?
I think the composer’s name really ought to be included somewhere for their *perfect* musical score.

How many children have followed the moon as they watch it through a car window? It always seem to stay with you, but never gets closer. This is just what happens to the kitten in Kevin Henkes's Kitten's First Full Moon. This Caldecott winner is a fun loving story of a kitten who believes the full moon he sees in the sky is a bowl of milk waiting just for him. The beautiful black and white illustrations take you through the kitten's attempts at reaching the moon so enjoy what he is convinced is a bowl of delicious milk. To the kitten's dismay, he never reaches the moon, but returns home to find a real bowl of milk on the porch, just for him. This is a fun story with easy to follow illustrations that any child would enjoy, and could possibly relate to. Aren't we all fascinated by a full moon in a dark sky?

Kitten's First Full Moon is a story about a kitten who notices a full moon for the first time, and believes that it is a bowl of milk in the sky. The kitten struggles to reach the moon, that she thinks is milk, but fails and returns home discouraged. When she arrives back home, a bowl of milk is there waiting for her, which makes a happy ending for the kitten. I think this is a good book to use for testing predictions, because once the kitten gives up, it is predictable that the milk will be there waiting for her at home. The illustrator uses gray scale in the pictures, creating a fitting representation for the night-time feel for the setting of the story. Also, bold and thing lines are used to create contrast between things in the foreground and background, and contrast between the actions of the cat and the background as well. The illustrator also manages to create great expression in the kitten's face just by making simple emphasis on the mouth, eyes, and ears. The man character is a kitten, which most children adore and value; this keeps them interested in the story due to the attraction that most kids have for animals. The story uses a kitten as the subject. Had a cat been used, it may have not pertained to children as well as the kitten does.

Kitten's First Full Moon is a story about a determined Kitten. She wants the moon which she thinks is a big bowl of milk. I love the kitten in this story. It is super cute when she sees the reflection of the moon in the water and falls into the lake. All that only to find the milk on her porch. Henkes did an amazing job on the illustrations. I loved the gray scale vibe.

In this beautiful picture book, winner of the 2005 Caldecott Medal, Kevin Henkes, captures the sweet, sometimes slapstick struggle of Kitten, who sees her first full moon and thinks it's a bowl of milk in the sky.Any child who has yearned for anything will understand how much Kitten wants that elusive bowl of milk. Readers will giggle as she tries to lick the faraway moon and gets a bug on her tongue, or leaps to catch it and falls down the stairs. In an effective refrain, the narrator repeats, "Still, there was the little bowl of milk, just waiting." The winning combination here is the simplicity and humor of the story, paired with gorgeous black-and-white illustrations with thick black lines (mirrored by the thick bold sans-serif font) and shades of grey that are as luminous as a moonlit night should be. Full-moon circles and ovals appear throughout the design: white circle full moons on the endpapers, elliptical flowers by the porch, white circles of firefly light, oval pads on Kitten's paws, and her big round eyes (especially when surprised and soaking wet). Children will love Kitten's quest and ensuing comedy of errors, but what they will love even more is that there's an actual bowl of milk waiting on the porch for Kitten. A little kitten sees the moon for the first time and thinks it is a bowl of milk after chasing the moons image around the kitten heads home exhausted and soaking wet only to find a bowl of milk waiting for her.I really like this book! The little kitten is adorable and I like how the author makes you feel so bad for the kitten while she’s chasing the moon around and then at the end when the kitten comes home to the bowl of milk you feel so happy. In the classroom I would use this book as either a science lesson or a journal writing experience. For the Science lesson I would read the book aloud and then go on to teach them about the phases of the moon and how we see the moon differently every night. As a journal writing experience I would read the book aloud and then have the students get out there journals and write about when they saw something that looked liked something it wasn’t like the kitten in the book.

Summary:Kitten's First Full Moon is about a little kitten who is hungry. She looks up at the moon and thinks it is a giant bowl of milk just for her. She tries many ways to get to this bowl of milk. She tries to lick the sky, jump for it, chasing it, climbing a tree, and jumping into a lake. Of course none of these work so she returns home to find a bowl of milk on the porch waiting for her. She goes from being unlucky to lucky. Personal Reaction:I think the story is very cute. It shows the bravery of young things when there is something they want. The pictures in the book, in my opinion, are very descriptive and interesting even though it isn't in color. I find that very interesting. Classroom Extension Ideas:1. Teach a segment on bravery2. Teach a segment on the stars and moon and their shapes3. It could be done as a play for younger children

I love this book because it's about the curious nature of kittens. The kitten in this book is endlessly chasing a bowl of milk - the moon! She ends up stuck in a tree, then all wet from a puddle. She finally gives up and heads home, where there is an actual bowl of milk waiting for her. The illustrations are great. Henkes captured how adorable kittens are in real life with the sweet little facial expressions of the kitten in the book. This would be a great book for beginning readers.

Kitten mistakes the full moon for a big bowl of milk in the sky. She tries to get it, but fails. It's a cute book for preschoolers and could lead to some interesting conversations about the moon, about reflections, about kittens. Since giving bowls of milk to kittens is discouraged, I'm a bit surprised this book incorporated this, but it might lead to an interesting conversation about what you should or should not give to a kitten. The illustrations are well done. It is deserving of the Caldecott Medal it won.

A kitten has seen her first full moon and she thinks it's a bowl full of milk. She licks at it, jumps for it, runs towards it, climbs for it, and even jumps in the pond after its reflection, but to no avail. So the tired, wet and hungry kitten returns home to find a real bowl of milk waiting for her on the porch.Personal Reflection: This book is so cute. I love how the entire book is in black and white. It gives the allusion that it is night time and could possibly resemble the view point of the cat. I thought it was well written and a wonderful story for young children. Extensions: 1. Show students a chart of the different phases of the moon. Talk about the moon phases and what causes them. Ask students which one they like the most and why?2. Have students write a paragraph of a story they have heard about the moon, particularly the full moon. Have the students share their stories with each other.

Its about a cat and the moon -- my daughter's two favorite things! She loves the book even though at 15 months, I'm not sure if she understand's that the cat "thinks" that the moon is a dish of milk. Still, this story is a lot of fun, great text, nice black-and-white illustrations.
