- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I’ve only gotten up to chapter 7. I will read further, but at this point I know I see things from a different vantage point than the author. I’m currently recovering from major depressive disorder and it is going very well. I disagree with this author’s take on ‘optimism’ & extroversion. He implies that introverts are less likely to be optimistic, that socially outgoing people are the optimistic ones and quietude denotes pessimism. To me, this communicates a rather limited understanding of the mind of introverts and the definition of optimism. There is much deep joy experienced by people who are less boisterous. There are many beautiful writers, musicians, yogis, artists, poets and even athletes who enjoy a fulfilling life with their more quiet demeanour. The ‘appearance’ of being socially outgoing is not necessarily an indication of one’s degree of optimism. I am saying this as one who ‘appears’ to others as outgoing and gregarious and am recovering from clinical depression. I am actually learning from the introverts, the quiet ones a deeper seated, more authentic sense of joy than what is superficially exhibited by this author’s extroverted ‘optimists’.
