Little kids will be delighted to watch cute piglet Olivia go about her day, dressing in bright red clothes, go to the beach, got to the museum to discover ballet and painting. She's got lots of energy and wears her mother out, but during their bedtime story they exchange the words "I love you, anyway."

This was cute and charming but overall left me a little cold. However, I could see my nieces enjoying this one.

From a kid's point of view, Olivia is a kindred spirit - energy and curiosity to boot. Well drawn and written by Falconer. From a parent's point of view, Olivia is also a lot of fun. Who couldn't relate to the trials of Olivia's mother as she loves and cares for her piglet? And as for the cultural asides (New York cosmopolitan, as one reviewer here termed it), these are great. Adults, of course, will appreciate them. They also form the cultural backdrop that widens the horizons of kids - essential fare. Of course, few children (and perhaps not heaps of adults) will get all the cultural refs and debates packed into a reference to Jackson Pollock and Olivia's attempt to imitate him. But these references bubble away in a child's awareness to develop into a familiarity with the wider world and its culture. Falconer is not heavy-handed in the way he does it, but the book is an education as well as entertainment.

That hyperactive porcine wonder, Olivia, a pig with a strong (and winsome!) personality, debuted here, in this first picture-book devoted to her many adventures. Always on the go, always trying new things and imitating what she sees, Olivia wears everyone out, including herself! Whether imagining herself as one of Degas' ballerinas, after a visit to the museum, or attempting a Jackson Pollock style painting on her bedroom wall - much to the horror of her mother! - Olivia is a pig who likes to experiment...Chosen as a Caldecott Honor Book in 2001, Olivia launched a picture-book legend, one who has continued to be immensely popular since, and who now has a television show dedicated to her adventures. For my part, I absolutely love this book, and have since it was first published. The artwork is gorgeous, and well worthy of the Caldecott nod it won Ian Falconer. The scenes in which Olivia imagines herself as a ballerina, or attempts painting, are beautifully done, and immensely humorous. Recommended to anyone looking for picture-books featuring feisty girl characters with lots of imagination and sparkle!

Genre: fictionI would:- read this book aloud to my students during the first day or week of school to get them thinking about what they are like.- use this book to teach students about character.Review: Olivia is a good example of a fiction book because the character of Olivia seems believable and the art illustrates the story well.

I can definitely see why this is so popular. A little bit like Eloise, but more accessible to modern children.

Reread in March 2013 (originally late 2010). I don't so much see the resemblance to Eloise this time. Nor did I particularly enjoy it, so I'm taking one star off. Now I'll go see what the fine folks in the Children's Books group have to say about it.

I thought this book was cute but nothing ALL that impressive. Although the characters are all pigs, their actual characteristics are believable for the role they have in the family. The daughter, Olivia, ALWAYS wants to be doing something. Olivia thinks her younger brother is always annoying her- this is common in typical human families. For example, page 5 and 6 represented this 'typical' dynamic between siblings. I also believe that the illustrations were cute. Because I believe this would be a book targeted towards K-2nd grade students. There could have been more colors other than just red, black and white because of the targeted age group! I believe the all around take away of the book was no matter how crazy you make your loved ones, they still will love you - or at least that is the hope! A child and their parent or guardians relationship is nothing to be taken advantage of!

Olivia is a piglet, albeit a very talented and precocious one. Her clothing & accessories are red and she dreams of being a famous Diva one day.

"This is Olivia. She is good at lots of things (see her singing '40 very Loud Songs). She is Very good at wearing people out (see her banging a hammer, jumping, running, playing ball). She even wears herself out (see her passed out flat on her back)."

This is a simple and fun book to read, alone or to your young children.

This an adorable fantasy/realistic fiction story. Although the main character is a pig, hence fantasy, everything her and her family does is very relatable to what students may experience in their day-to-day lives. There are simple events of sibling interactions, imagining/day dreaming, reading before bed, and creating art that you saw at a museum. Olivia's life is very relatable even if she is just a pig.

I liked Olivia because the book was easy to read. The letters were a great size for smaller children. the Illustrations were also very good. Children can relate to Olivia because she is mischievous like most young children are. Olivia is a very fun pig who will steal your heart. This book encourages people to be themselves.

Olivia is a pig. She has a brother, mother, father,a dog, and a car. Olivia is the story of how exhausting, charming, demanding, curious, innovative, intelligent imaginative, independent a child between the ages of three to five can be. She does not like nap time. Give it forty years, she will change her mind.

Olivia is story about a fun loving pig and her family. The book goes through Olivia's daily routines and adventures. Olivia always wears everyone, including herself. I love this book because it is fun and the pictures are eye-catching. Everything is black and white and there are pops of red. I think all children would enjoy this book because of its fun nature and I think most children can relate to Olivia.

I liked this book for the characters and the illustrations. Despite the characters being pigs, the author develops the characters in a way that makes them believable and relatable to readers. I believe some parents will be able to relate this to their children asking for something and trying to negotiate to get their way like many children tend to do. The illustrations of Olivia in different outfits provides readers with great visuals to follow the text. My favorite aspect of the text is the overall message of this story to just be you and be proud of who you are.

I liked this book for the characters and the illustrations. Despite the characters being pigs, they are believable. The behaviors of the characters are relatable. For example Olivia says to her mom "Only five books tonight, Mommy." and then Olivia and her mom negotiate how many books will actually be read. I believe some parents can relate this to their children asking for something and trying to negotiate to get their way. The illustrations follow what is written. For example for the quote "Olivia gets dressed. She has to try on everything," there are 17 illustrations of Olivia in different outfits. The message of this story is to just be you.

This is a fantasy book. It follows the actions of Olivia, a mischievous little pig who gets into all sorts of trouble. There are not many words on each page, making it a relatively simple book that I could use in a 1st grade classroom.

The original "Olivia" book, the first in the series, shows why the book is so popular with kids and parents alike. The pictures are fitting for every page, allowing for chuckles along the way if the reader is paying attention to detail. Olivia wears her mother out, which is something every mother can relate to; however, Olivia's mother makes sure to let Olivia know that she is loved regardless. This is something parents can relate to, and the children will relate to the story overall. A great book for families and children overall.

This book isn't very long but it tells about a little pig named, Olivia. I liked this book so much I brought it to work with me to read it to my 3 year old class at the daycare I work at. They all loved the book too. The main character is about the same age as they are and they loved that they "do those things too!" The pictures were adorable and gave plenty of room for discussion between my class and I. I understand why it got the Caldecott Honor Book Award!

This is one of my all time favorite books. The illustrations are so simple, but incredibly descriptive of what is going on in the story. Olivia is a very well developed character who takes the reader on an adventure doing everything that she thinks is fun. Readers will fall in love with reading using this book because of its great pace and easy to understand language.

I found this book to be very comical. I always saw it around, and remember that "Olivia the pig" is a funny character but never got around to reading one of these books. This particular one is about a girl pig named Olivia who likes to get into a lot of things. It explains what she likes to do every day, on sunny, and rainy days. The story was a little random and jumpy because she was always doing something different on each page, but that's what I liked. My favorite part was the illustration of her, and the red detail on every page, whether it was a ball, or an article of clothing she was wearing, or paint, There was always a touch of red on the page, which I found to be very original. Even though the story didn't exactly have a set plot, I could get a feeling for Olivia's rambunctious character. All of the illustrations were done in pencil and shading. I would definitely recommend this book to someone, and I'm sure her other books are just as good! On the inside cover it says : Have fun with Olivia... dressing up, singing songs, building sand castles, napping (maybe). dancing, painting on walls, and - whew!- going to sleep at last". I noticed that was there at the end of the book, but that was everything this story covered, so I like that it gives the reader an idea about what the book is about before opening it.

Olivia is the story of the adorable little pig that many of us are so familiar with. I enjoyed reading this book and being able to read and feel all the energy that Olivia has and what she decides to d with it. A great and easy read that kids are sure to enjoy. I would definitely recommend this book to any parent with little readers at home.

Ian Falconer does an amazing job bringing a little pig named Olivia to life. Olivia has a big and unique personality. She is ready to try to do just about anything that she finds interesting. She has two brothers, one of them named Ian who she calls "my little bother" The book is very cute and the illustrations are very nice. The author dims all the colors around the main character, making them blend and letting the main character stand out. Ian Falconer has a several of these books with all of Olivia's adventures. Many children especially girls can relate to the main character who wants to know about everything around her.

She likes to do and try new things. She is very smart and reminds me so much of me when I was little. I wanted to always do everything. She is was a good book to read.Classroom extension1. I would read the book to older children and have them draw something that they like to do just like Olivia.2. I would show the kids a picture or artwork and have the children paint, draw, or color what they see. Just like Olivia did in the story.

Olivia is a book about a pig with a lot of energy. It is about her day and how she wears other people out and also herself. I love how it explains Olivia's personality and despite all the things she does, her mom says "I love you anyway." This book would be great for students to connect to their daily routine and how it compares or contrasts to Olivia's. Also, it could be fun for students to draw themselves throughout the day just as Olivia is drawn in this book and then make connections.
