- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It is a love story but does have a weird twist to the book. It was a good read to pass the time.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Too much about thier relationship to a point the book had about a 10% storyline.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It's a great short love story. One of her better ones.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This was one of the worst Evanovich novels I've read, even of her early romance novels. it's just plain silly, but not in a funny or whimsical way--just seems like bad ideas and bad writing. If you are a really die-hard Evanovich fan, you may enjoy seeing her style in its infant stages, slowly developing. Otherwise, I doubt anyone would enjoy this ridiculously badly written piece of nonsense.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5One of Janet Evanovich's early romances, it is as funny as her Stephanie Plum series. Ivan has sold his home to Stephanie Lowe who has had nothing but problems with it. When her cousin Lucy decides to get married she talks Stephanie into filling in as the cook on Ivan's sloop. Stephanie is not much of a cook but she decides to help out her cousin. Ivan wonders what else will happen with Stephanie on the sloop as he met her as she rolled down the hill to the sloop then swore. After they get back on land Ivan requests a room for the winter at his old house which Stephanie wants to turn into a bed and breakfast. Then it gets crazy.I laughed out loud at the predicaments Stephanie got herself into. I had so much fun reading this story. I liked the characters. I loved the motivation behind many of their actions. There were times when Stephanie and Ivan were serious as they came to know one another. Other times they were mentally face-palming themselves over some of the "action." This is worth the read.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Good book with some hard to put the book down scenes, and an interesting twist near the end.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This was initially written in 1989 and reissued in 2005. Very schlocky, predictable, not much finesse to it. Not my thing.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was a very cute short novel. I found myself laughing out loud at some of the outrageous circumstances the characters found themselves in.
I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys romantic comedy. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5fluffy funHer dream home is in Camden, Maine, overlooking the ocean. Stephanie plans to turn it into a B&B for the tourists who flock to the area each year for the Windjammer cruises, as well as to spend time on the gorgeous Maine coast and offshore islands. She purchases the house, called Haben, from schooner Captain Ivan Rassmussen, a descendant of pirates. His family had lived at Haben for generations. After the sale is completed, she discovers that the toilet is dysfunctional. It leaks so bad that the bathroom floor collapses and falls into the kitchen and downstairs bathroom. The bathroom mirrors go the way of the floor. A new heater is needed desperately before the cold sets in, and the wooden porch floor is rotten. Stephanie, with limited funds, feels she has been swindled by Ivan, And the final straw, his ancient Aunt Tess, long departed from this world, (at least physically), haunts the widow's walk. Fortunately for Ivan, the ghost will only speak to women. Stephanie's cousin Lucy, the chef on the "Josiah T. Savage," the Captain's schooner, is engaged to a plumber. The couple plan to take a week off to wed and enjoy a short honeymoon. Lucy promises Stephanie that if she will take her place as cook on Ivan's 100 year-old ship for this one week, and feed the handsome Captain, a confirmed bachelor, the crew and passengers, she will have her new husband install the toilet. Although our protagonist barely knows how to boil water, she desperately needs an indoor john. As she steps onboard the "Savage" and greets Ivan, something happens to both of them that never surfaced during the house signing. Sparks fly!! Bigtime! Ivan the Terrible finds the temperature rising rapidly. And Steph, although a virgin, really feels the heat! The sea trip with passengers is a blast. The kitchen is only a mega disaster for a day or two. The dialogue is fast, furious and delightful. Ms. Evanovich's outrageous humor will be immediately recognizable to fans of the Stephanie Plum series. It is also fun to glimpse prototypes for her future characters. This is a short, simple, well-written romance - wonderfully entertaining fluff. It's the perfect read for a plane trip or a dismal weekend afternoon. I enjoyed! Hope you do too!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5When Stephanie first meets Ivan it is on less than happy terms. She has agreed to cover chef duty aboard his tour boat, for a relative who has headed off to get married. Between attempting to cook and searching for the mystery ghost, Stephanie and Ivan start to develop a relationship but it is short-lived and Stephanie heads back to dry land, without Ivan. She returns to her home to work on home-improvements, however still with feelings for Stephanie, Ivan asks to room at her home. Once Ivan moves in there is more than just their relationship that picks up. Visits from a dead body also begin and it is a big surprise who is behind the ghostly visits. This was a really enjoyable book. There are many laugh out loud moments and the story-line is less than predictable. I will definitely be reading more Janet Evanovich books.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Funny set of circumstances leads to love & mystery. Lady takes the place of a cook on a small cruise boat. She can't cook, murder occurs & she falls in love with the captain. Easy to follow & yet intriguing.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Running too short on money to afford repairs on her newly acquired home, Stephanie Lowe’s cousin Lucy gave her an alternative, cooking on the pirate ship ‘Savage’ for a new toilet. Watching his new cook roll down the hill caught his attention, Ivan Rasmussen just didn’t know how much attention he would have to give this addition to his crew till his favorite ghost, Tess Rasmussen started showing her presence nearly everywhere they went. This book is a funny, cute, wonderful, light hearted, quick read. Originally published as ‘Ivan Takes a Wife’ back in 1989, but even today, who would not laugh out loud at orange hair. Touching when it needs to be, the love affair is slow to grow but so much fun and then the real fun is revealed.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I sped through another quickie by Janet Evanovich. She'd better start writing those again, because I've only got a few left to read. Love Overboard was a fun one. It follows the same formula, but it had a good plot. Stephanie is a former cop who takes on the roll of cook for a week long cruise on a sailing ship. She's just there for the week and she meets Ivan, the captain. He's everything a romance novel man should be, good looking, charming, funny, helpful, etc. . . I'm sure there were bulging biceps as well. Ivan falls in love quite quickly and is determined to keep Stephanie in his life long after she leaves the ship. It's got a little bit of a ghost story, some wacky friends, and a sweet romance. Again, if you need a quick read, pick up any of the Janet Evanovich romances. Lots of fun.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is one of my favorites from her re-release closet! I think I am in love (just don't tell my husband). Ivan is hot and sexy...well, aren't they all?
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Before she started writing the excellent Stephanie Plum mysteries, Evanovich wrote some simple, short romantic comedies that are now being reprinted. These are great if you want something funny and sweet to cheer you up. There's not much too them, but I've been enjoying them due mainly to Evanovich's great sense of humor. They're all really similar to each other. Plum fans will like them because they contain the seeds of many of her best characters. Love overboard is the story of a wannabe B&B owner who falls for the ships captain that sold her the wreck of a haunted house.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This is a pre-Stephanie Plum book. Amusing characters that get themselves involved in funny situations regarding a haunted B&B and a week on a schooner as a cook with wood stove and oddball passengers.
