About this audiobook

The world’s vampire population is on the brink of starvation since the vaccine to treat a global pandemic rendered human blood deadly to them. Their only hope for survival is a handful of rural areas that the vaccine never breached. The tiny town of Penton, Alabama, is one such enclave, where the immortal Aidan Murphy has established a community of vampires and their willingly bonded humans. Together, they live in peace—until Aidan’s estranged brother descends upon the town and begins attacking its humans. Whether the rampage is a result of his centuries-old feud with Aidan or the civil war threatening to erupt in the vampire world matters not. All that matters is the blood. Desperate to save his adopted family, Aidan breaks one of his cardinal rules, kidnapping an unvaccinated human doctor—and unexpectedly falling in love for the first time in nearly four hundred years. Sensual and thrilling, Redemption is the first installment of what is sure to be a darkly addictive new series from paranormal romance novelist Susannah Sandlin.

In the opener that introduces the vampire scathe of Penton to the reader, Susannah Sandlin has created a unique premise that provides social good for the human world while providing the vampires a source of untainted and willing blood donors. With a mix of solid world-building, a talent for creating word pictures with descriptions and characters that are well defined with points of view that mix personality with humor and quirks and give them voice, this story will engage and entertain from the first page to the last. The interactions, conversation and chemistry in character interaction were raw and real, never feeling forced or overly sentimental. This book is a great start to the series and introduction to this author’s work.

Redemption contains a world of vampires with a couple of new twists on the mythology. They are in the middle of a pandemic and are in danger of starving. Apparently there is a virus sweeping through the humans and the vaccine to this virus is poisonous to vampires. So anyone injected with the vaccine cannot give blood to vampires. There are also numerous vampires that are bonded to humans and those humans are under their protection. Another benefit of being bonded is that the humans cannot be fed on by other vampires other than their bonded vampire. So they are basically set for life with any personal needs they might have. Vampires also feed from humans they call familiars. Familiars are humans they are bonded to. Those humans are not necessarily single. Some are married to other humans or familiars. It took a little while for me to wrap my brain around being married to one person but letting someone else feed from you. Especially since feeding is very intimate in this world. I had to adapt to the way this world worked since I was not used to it. It was not good or bad, just different. Before I talk about the romance in Redemption I do need to address one issue I had. I did not like Aiden enthralling Krys numerous times towards the beginning of the book. I get why he thought he needed to kidnap her so she could help out his people and that could be forgiven in time, but enthralling her like he did repeatedly just did not sit right with me. I also did not like that Krys did not really react negatively to this at all. Once she woke up from the spells she was pretty much over it. I know if that happened to me I would be pissed off and I wanted to see more of that from Krys. Especially considering her past and how her father treated her, I was surprised she let the enthralling slide so easily.Alright, so now the romance. Once I got past the enthralling issue I really did like Aiden. He has not been dealt an easy hand and he is trying to protect his people the best way that he can. He knows what he is doing with Krys is not very ethical, but he is desperate to save his people and she seems to be his only option at the moment. Once the two of them actually starting spending some real time together I did feel their connection. They are both lost and needed someone else to be there to help them find out who they really are. They are also both very afraid of divulging their true feelings and jumping into a relationship that might not work out. I was genuinely rooting for them in the end, and kept fingers crossed that they could work past their trust issues and just be together. The villain in Redemption was fantastic! It actually turned out to be Aiden’s brother, Owen, which just made it all the more personal and vicious. He was ruthless, cruel and Susannah did a fantastic job of making him a huge threat to Aiden’s world. Paranormal romance novels need a great villain to spur the action forward and Owen fit the bill perfectly. I was shocked by some of his behavior and some of it was even hard to read at points, but he is the villain and his behavior made it very easy to hate him.Overall, I did enjoy this world and while I was not wowed by the book, I did finish it all in one day. I am intrigued enough by Redemption to know that I will read future books when they are released. I am just hoping the enthralling will be kept to a minimum in future titles. I suggest checking out other reviews of this book and maybe read a chapter or two to see what you think before picking it up yourself.

Quick & Dirty: Thrilling and well-written paranormal romance set in a dark and mysterious world where vampires struggle for blood. The Review: After reading the synopsis to Redemption, I knew I had to read this novel. Vampires on the brink of starvation and a town set up as a safe haven for vampires and their unvaccinated humans, so it was with great eagerness that I read this novel by Susannah Sandlin also known as Suzanne Johnson. Aiden Murphy has set up a nice, quaint town in Alabama as a safe haven for himself, a group of vampires and a group of humans with unvaccinated blood that is safe to drink. The human race suffered from a global pandemic for which the vaccine greatly changed their blood making it no longer safe for vampires to drink. Aiden’s peaceful town has recently been attacked and there is now a job opening for a doctor. Enter Dr. Krystal Harris, an unvaccinated doctor, whom was lured into town for a job interview with the promise of being her own boss and enough money to help pay off her enormous college debt. Krystal’s doctor skills are put to use as soon as she arrives into town for her interview. Aiden’s brother, Owen, is attacking the town’s residents sending Aiden a message that his little experiment is not working. Unfortunately for Krys, Aiden decides his town needs her help more than he needs her cooperation so he locks her up and mind controls her into staying. Krys’s mind is strong so it doesn’t take her long to figure out what is happening. Krys and Aiden are instantly attracted to one another but after Aiden messes with Krys’ mind he is pretty sure that she will hate him after that and naturally Krys does. She wants nothing more than to get away from Aiden and his town. Owen’s attacks are getting worse and as much as Krys would like to rebel and not treat the victim’s she can’t do that. Will Krys and Aiden continue to ignore their feelings? Can Krys get over her terrible past and not let it weigh so heavily on her future? Krys knows what she wants in life and fights hard to get the future she wants. She is strong and sure of herself. It doesn’t take long for her to figure out what is happening to her and why the people in the town act so strangely around her. Krys is practical and believes in science so it takes a while for her to believe her eyes. Aiden fights his feelings towards Krys from the very beginning. He cannot be distracted from his town. He very much wants it to succeed. Aiden is a loner in his own way and is also trying to get over his own horrible past. Redemption sets up a whole new world of vampire politics, scheming and vampire/human bonding. In this world where human blood is like acid to the vampires, it is a reality that vampires could become extinct if they don’t figure out a way to survive. Aiden has come up with a reasonable solution but others want nothing more than for him to fail. Redemption is the opening into a war that is only going to get tougher. Overall, Redemption is a dark and thrilling read. Some people may not like the situation that Krys is put in but I think she reacted reasonably for what she was put through, even as she tries to make up excuses to herself, you can’t help who you fall in love with right? In this world vampires are still in hiding but with the blood situation it is making it difficult for vampires to live and Redemption sets up the beginning with a war that can only get more dangerous and terrible. Redemption is also full of secondary characters that I can’t wait to read more about, especially Mirren and Will, I can’t wait to pick up a copy of Absolution.

Many at the governing body of the Vampire Tribunal, feel threatened by Aiden Murphy and the army he is building in Penton. Matthias Ludiam is one of those vampires. He secretly sends a killer to infiltrate Penton, Aidan’s older brother Owen.Redemption sets the foundation and is a great start the Penton Legacy Series. This action pact book is exciting and hard to put down. I enjoyed the characters and community of Penton; both having a lot of depth. Penton is a worthy community were the inhabitants feel that they finally belong.Susannah Sandlin did an admiral job with the start of the Penton Legacy Series. I can’t wait to read book two, Absolution. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

If you’ve read any of my PNR/UF reviews, one thing you will notice is that I tend to wax poetic about the same things. If I really enjoy a particular book, it almost always has to do with the world-building. Any book that sucks me into a unique world, takes a hold of my imagination and doesn’t let me go, is a winner on all counts. And I loved the world Sandlin opens the door to in Redemption. In fact, I loved this book. It hit many of my book crush points – unique world, relatable heroine, and great couple chemistry. The vampire world of Penton, AL is an interesting one and I invite you all to check it out with me.One thing that makes the world so interesting, and, quite frankly, a bit scary, is this idea of starving vampires. Vampires in and of themselves are scary but do you really want starving vampires running around? And that’s exactly what we have in the world of Redemption. A vaccine created to end a pandemic in the human world has had catastrophic effects on the vampire world. This vaccine has made most human blood poisonous to vampires. Unvaccinated human blood is hard to come by and highly valued. Enter Aidan Murphy, master vampire and founder of Penton, AL, a small enclave of vampires and their unvaccinated human familiars living quietly and peacefully together in mutually beneficial relationships. Humans in Penton are obviously aware of vampires and are there of their own free will, giving their blood to, and bonded with, vampires of the town. Aidan had founded Penton on the idea that humans were the equals of vampires. Respect them for keeping you alive, he preached. Treat them as family. Don’t act like monsters. In return, human familiars have a safe place to live, nice houses, and small town comfort that can’t help but make one feel secure. This idea of the rest of the vampire world, outside of Penton, gives a great sort of looming presence to the story and adds a sense of insecurity to the reader. I mean, a vampire paradise can’t last forever, right? But I’ll get to that in a minute. The vampires themselves are also interesting. There is Aidan, Irish and at least four centuries old, brooding, lonely, hiding a lot of hurt in his past; Mirren, a huge, physically intimidating vampire whose history as an infamous assassin or henchman is only hinted at here, is Aidan’s right-hand man; William is also a member of Aidan’s circle of trust and son of Matthias Ludlam, a ruthless member of the Vampire Tribunal who wants to bring down Penton and get his son back; there is also 12-year old Hannah, a child-vampire, wise beyond her years with the gift of sight. This is a tight circle, all bonded to Aidan and with a mental connection to him that opens up communication but also allows him to draw on their energy. And vampires use both physical and mental means to battle one another.I really enjoyed this world. I loved this idea of a small town experiment, of powerful, closely knit vampires and humans, living together, trying to create a new way to relate to one another in peaceful coexistence. I found it interesting that many of the human familiars were recovering addicts, given a new lease on life in Penton, an idea I hope is developed more. I also loved the jocular, caring, yet intense relationships between the vampires themselves and their human familiars. It was such a well-conceived community and I was immediately drawn into it.Penton also needs a doctor. Enter Krys Harris. I loved her as a heroine. She comes from an abusive past – her father was both physically and mentally abusive; she is swimming in medical school debt; a loner. And she wants to work in rural medicine. Krys agrees to an interview but one thing leads to another and Aidan’s desperation for her help in an emergency situation leads him to kidnap her and hold her in Penton against her will while she treats the wounds of a human patient. The attraction between Aidan and Krys is undeniable. Something intense flared in his eyes, and her heart thudded as he slid a palm up her arm. “Do you know how extraordinary you are? I—“ He paused, then shook his head and started back down the hall. “Come on, let’s walk.”Damn. She really, really wanted to hear the rest of that sentence. Krys has to fight to escape while also fighting her attraction to him. For me, what makes Krys so relatable is the fact that there’s a constant battle between what she wants to do and what she should do. Given her past, the last thing she wants to do is submit to a man, to feel controlled and manipulated. But there is something about Aidan…I think we’ve all had those moments of trying to decide what our hearts really want versus what we feel we should be or do. …it felt as if her life has been stripped bare, and she wasn’t sure who Krystal Harris was or what she wanted, except that it couldn’t be a life defined by another controlling man. This struggle was real and well-developed. And Krys does not back down from trying to escape when the opportunity presents itself. She did not go quietly into that goodnight, if you know what I mean. The resolution to her struggle was not an easy one and I loved that about her. Now, let’s get back to the end of the vampire paradise. As I said before, one of the great things about this book is the feeling of threat to this idyllic Penton community. That immediate threat comes in the form of Owen Murphy, Aidan’s brother. These two have a twisted past and hold serious grudges against one another. Owen is sent there by Matthias to bring Aidan, and Penton, down. If there is one weak point in the book for me, it’s Owen. I didn’t find him scary or threatening enough. Owen did a lot of waiting around on the outskirts and I just never really felt he was a real danger to Penton. The Vampire Tribunal, on the other hand, is the threat I’m really interested in seeing developed. There is only so long powerful but hungry vampires are going to sit on the wayside and watch Penton thrive. And I, for one, can’t wait to see what that battle is going to be like.Redemption had everything I like in a good PNR – great romance, interesting world, and a complicated heroine. And I thought about Penton for a long while after finishing Redemption. I even Googled it to see if it was real town. Not that I expected to really find vampires there or anything. Nope. Not me.
