About this audiobook
"Konrath is one of the greatest thriller writers alive."
--Blake Crouch, bestselling author of Wayward Pines
In 1906, a crew of workers at the Panama Canal unearthed something that could not be identified or explained. Something sinister. And very much alive . . .
One hundred years later, a team of scientists gather at an underground facility in New Mexico to determine what this being is--the most amazing discovery in the history of mankind--and how it has managed to survive. A biologist will analyze its structure. A veterinarian will study its behavior. A linguist will translate its language. But even the greatest minds in the world cannot answer one inescapable question: Could this ancient creature, this mockery of God and nature, actually be the ancient demon known as . . . the Beast?

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was such an interesting story bring6up some real thoughts on religion and mans existence. Primarily its a monster thriller , nice characters , a good narrator and a good story . OK so it's a little slow in the middle but I didn't mind that.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I enjoyed this story very much. Well imagined & scary monsters.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A very enjoyable story. It will keep your attention until the end.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5So the beginning is very gripping, but around the middle mark starts to descend into tropes. It has the unbelievable, but in so many books, throw away romance. The conclusion also ultimately feels like a non ending for a sequel I don’t think exists. It was good enough to finish, but the last two thirds don’t really live up to the promise from the start.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I have mixed feelings on Origin. I really didn't like the initial character introductions, they felt forced, but still there was a Michael Crichton like feel to the story. A demon, imprisoned and studied by the government suddenly wakes up. There's the expected screaming, running and dying. All in all, it's a good story with some flaws.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Decent. Pulled me in at the beginning like some of his other books. Lost me about midway through though. It turned into background noise eventually but I did listen to entirely.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I enjoyed the concept of this book and the constant suspense ... BUT I hated the ending. If you dislike ambiguous endings then this is NOT the book for you. Felt the same way after watching the final season of Game of thrones ... with such awesome content ... THIS was the best ending you could come up with? Horrible payout.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Awesome! Smart, fast moving, and fresh. I will reach for this author again!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Listened to this twice and it was just as fantastic the second time around. This was more like a dark thriller than it was horror. I'm not a horror damn, but goodness this was an incredible performance and an incredible story.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5So good! Brilliant! I enjoyed this one from start to finish. I'm glad I have it a chance. It was the type of book you think about when you're not reading it. Wondering what will happen next.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Slow starting but gets better as it goes, wondering about a sequal ...
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5DDifferent and interesting perspective on religion, and the origin of mankind.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great story, great concept, great writing. It was hard to put down and the last few chapters were gripping.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Read/listened to the audio book. Fast paced, with a transparent plot of the devil unearthed.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very interesting. Well-written, but not overly literary. Well-narrated. Not for kids, nor for the faint of heart. Gore is not flamboyantly described, nor is it too prevalent, but your imagination does the rest. Good for a long road trip or whilst performing scads of dry data entry.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The narrator does such a great job.5 stars for him alone!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great story, well performed, and very, very, gory. Thumbs up!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Sure there were things that could have been better but honestly it’s been increasingly hard for me to find audio books that I want to listen to every chance I get. Most of the time it’s just something in my ear while I work. This was different, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It was entertaining and had some good humor sprinkled in.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Refreshingly good read. Interesting angle for the story. Worth a read.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I usually don't care for books that start off with politics, the president, the military, or anything of that nature. I borrowed this book without reading the description. My only criteria for adding it to my borrow requests was seeing the cover, and of course the author's name. I was a bit disappointed when I started reading, to find that it was about a "top secret government project." So I was pleasantly surprised to find that I enjoyed it anyway.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Origin A TechnothrillerBy: J. A. KonrathNarrated by: Luke DanielsThis is an awesome thriller! A creature is found in 1906, asleep in a coma state. Its monstrous, like our idea of a demon. It is kept secret underground, examined, and monitored for all this time but now it woke up. Its making speech so they get a specialist to go with the other specialists already there. What happens and what they find out about this creature is wild! The whole story is excellent!Narration terrific with Luke Daniels!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Really good! Read it while sitting at the pool - wasn't expecting much, but really enjoyed it and will definitely seek out more by the author.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Great book, brilliant read with an amazing villain. I really enjoyed the book and found myself reading till much too late at night. It kept me guessing until the very end.
Definitely one to read. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Origin is a great little book with outstanding characters and a hook almost guaranteed to get readers to open the book and start reading. The hook is that the US government has Satan captured and held in an impenetrable underground facility for well over a hundred years. As a team of scientists continue to run tests and experiments on the comatose demon, he suddenly wakes up and sets into motion a number of events that create an unforgettable reading experience. The book has few, if any, slow spots and contains a number of interesting plot twists. Konrath writes in a flowing, cinematic style that keeps readers turning pages. This is my third book by Konrath; "Disturb" & "Afraid" are the others and both are excellent. I will look for more from this under-appreciated author.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Fun thriller, not many surprises though and a bit short. A lot of possibilities here, most of them unrealized. Still, enjoyable, I recommend reading it for something short and entertaining with little thought involved.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great book, love Bub even though he's bad.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Something was discovered in Panama in 1906. Large, bestial, and hidden in what looked like a sarcophagus. The president had it moved to New Mexico in an underground facility. This discovery “Bub” has been in a coma for all these years and workers, sworn to secrecy, have come and gone. But now the creature has awakened. There are carvings on the sarcophagus and the creature isn’t speaking in a language anyone recognizes. Andy Dennison, a linguist, is awakened one day with a message: “Your country needs you.” He has nothing else going for him, knee deep in debt, so he takes the job. There are others on staff—two religious figures who argue over the significance of the find (the Rabbi claims “we don’t know the devil’s side of the story because God wrote all the books”) and what the beast actually is, science experts, a veterinarian, and Race, who heads up the program. The author dishes out similarities to popular movies with relish. Some think the creature is alien (ala Independence Day). Description of Bub during feeding time is reminiscent of Jurassic Park. If all else fails, there is an order to destroy the facility. And failure it is as Bub gets out and wreaks havoc. Lots of humor is tossed in to balance the gore. However, I’m not sure if the author was being clever with his ending or leaving an opening for a sequel. Either way, this was an enjoyable thriller.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Cheap ebook thriller that did what I wanted—the U.S. government has a monster locked in an underground bunker. When it wakes up, it claims to be the Devil. Hijinks (and a side order of romance between a linguist and a doctor) ensue. Brisk and shallow; value for money.
