About this audiobook

"Hooper's unerring story sense and ability to keep the pages flying can't be denied." -Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine

New York Times bestselling author Kay Hooper returns with a novel of blood-chilling suspense as hunters become the hunted in a desperate game of survival against all odds.…

Haven operative Luther Brinkman has been sent into the wilderness of the Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee to locate escaped felon Cole Jacoby, a mentally unstable bank robber. Supposedly, Jacoby hid more than ten million dollars from his last heist before he was captured-and rather mysteriously escaped federal custody. And once Brinkman finds Jacoby, the agent is left severely wounded, with no way to convey his location to Haven.

Callie Davis, an agent with the FBI's Special Crimes Unit, has been in the area for some time due to the foresight of her boss and unit chief, Noah Bishop. But when she finds the wounded Brinkman, her rescue mission turns into a deadly game of cat and mouse.

What neither Luther nor Callie knows is that their quarry is far more than an escaped bank robber. And that in hunting him, they will find themselves being hunted by him, and will discover him to be the worst monster either of them has ever known.

A double story line linking Haven and the FBI/SCU. Haven operative Luther Brinkman with FBI/SCU Callie Davis are trying to locate an escaped felon, their counterparts FBI/SCU Hollis Templeton and Reese DeMarco are practicing Hollis’ medium skills while trying to locate a paranormal anomaly. This second book of the Haven trilogy is steeped in psychics of many callings and a mystery that looms dark on the horizon. A great mix of mystery, murder and the paranormal.

    3.5 ★'s

The series features FBI agents from the Special Crimes Unit and private investigators from the Haven agency who are called in on investigations of the worst, most grisly, most mysterious crimes. These agents all have something in common - psychic talents ranging from telepathy to clairvoyance to almost anything else you can imagine (think Criminal Minds with psychics). Way too much explanation about their abilities and positive and negative energy. We get it. If you can make it through the first 80% of the book you will really like the last 20% where the story comes together.

A Bishop/Special Crimes Unit thriller with two story lines One story line is the search of an escaped bank robber on the loose in the Appalachians which brings up questions of exactly how did he escape? Then there is a widow who wishes to speak with her dead husband one last time. This was the first Kay Hooper I've read but I will be reading others.

Another fantastic thriller by Crais, this one was brutally gripping and makes me want to see the movie adaptation with Bruce Willis.

Kay Hooper's books are always fun to read and I even enjoy the paranormal aspect thrown into the Bishop/Special Crimes Unit series. Hostage was a lot of fun to read and as usual, Hooper managed to send a shiver up my spine.

Number 14 in the series which also has 3 spin off series. Ms Hooper can write some of the best suspense/thrillers I've ever read. Even with the 14th book, the series stays new and intriguing.

What I liked: The characters! and there are a lot of them. Some characters make repeated appearances in her novels but she is always adding more which adds to the possible storylines. Hostage has kept me entertained for the last couple of days and kept me awake. I don't like to read Ms Hooper's books all in one sitting because they are intricate and I need to process the information. I really like the two storylines running side by side. If you've read any of Ms Hooper's other novels in this series, you know, somewhere along the way, the stories will connect. The fun and suspense is finding out where and how! You can also count on an original plot with each new entry in the series.

Hostage really made me think. I was very glad to see Hollis front and center in this novel. She is one of my favorites. I also enjoyed seeing the Haven operatives working with the SCU agents. Very well written, of course, and living in Tennessee, I know the descriptions were spot on.

What I didn't like: It can be frustrating for the reader to keep up with all the twists and turns with no seeming resolution in sight but that's the fun of Ms Hooper's novels. Much of what appears random information turns into clues. The suspense leading up to the resolution was great but then fizzle. It was just done. That was disappointing to me as a reader.

I always look forward to any release by Ms Hooper.

The hardcover price is very reasonable at $16.17 but I still feel the Kindle edition is high at $8.54. The paperback isn't available yet.

Highly recommend!! but start at the beginning of the series for deeper enjoyment and understanding.

Long before books with touches of romance and the paranormal became over-the-top popular, Kay Hooper was writing her Bishop/Special Crimes Unit novels. The series features FBI agents (from the Special Crimes Unit) and private investigators (from the loosely associated Haven agency) who are called in on investigations of the worst, most grisly, most mysterious crimes. These agents all have something in common - psychic talents ranging from telepathy to clairvoyance to almost anything else you can imagine (think Criminal Minds with psychics). The books are entertaining with just a touch of romance and pretty dependable for a good fun read. One of the things I like about this series is the way the author handles entry into the series. First, she writes in trilogies so entry is as simple as going back to the first in the trilogy. Second, when a character references events that happen in another book, the author includes the title of the other book in a footnote so you can keep track (and go back to read other books). She also includes a nifty glossary of her definitions for the psychic talents that are identified. I've always enjoyed this series as a source of dependable escapism and the latest, Hostage, does not disappoint. In Hostage (the second in the trilogy that begins with Haven), readers are transported to the Appalachians where agents are pursuing an escaped bank robber who demonstrated unusual talents at the time of his escape and, in looking retrospectively, at the time of his last (and greatest) robbery. Nearby, other agents are trying to assist a widow who desires nothing more than to speak to her deceased husband one last time. As these two lines of inquiry collide, Hostage reveals a mystery that is deeper than the one we imagined and that has long fingers into the history of both agencies. Solid, dependable fun - a great read for when you need some mind candy.

This was a stand alone novel and not part of the Cole & Pike series but it was quite good in its on right. Suspenseful and stressful. There were parts were I was frustrated and angry with the characters and others where I was confused about Mr. Crais' story, but it all pulled together. I'd have liked a bit more resolution and wrap-up at the end, but I understand what he did, and really, that was all that was necessary.

The hostage by W.E.B Griffin was a terrific book. The book deserves 5 stars for its stupendous writing. I loved this book throughout the whole thing. Griffin tells the story of a man named Charley castillo(the Presidents agent) that go's to argentina to investigate a kidnapping. While he is there 2 of his friends are killed and another is injured. It is now his job to find whoever did it and render them harmles. This was an allaround great book. I would reccomend this book to people in highschool and older. I look forward to reading Giffins next book, "The Hunters".

Almost 500 pages with no action. The author seems to try to write occasional sentences that trail on forever as if in search of an editor. The final result is proof the search was fruitless. Despite some likable characters and a romp through cabinet-level (and up) power brokers, this is easily the worst book I've read in years.

This is the second book with Charley Castillo doing his work for the President of the United States. This time the wife of a diplomat in Argentina has been kidnapped and no one has any clue who did it or what they are after. Castillo's job is to find out who, knew what and when, and to help in any way possible to get Mrs. Masterson back. It didn't take long for Charley to learn that the kidnapping is just the tip of the iceberg. The stakes keep going up, the presidents expectations of Castillo keep going up as well. Can Castillo get ahead of these people or is he doomed to be one step behind?I really enjoyed listening to this book and I thought it was even better than the first one. There were quite a few places that made me laugh out loud. It also had a lot of twists and turns and I was surprised many times by the direction the story went. I highly recommend.

A brilliant thriller - a good page-turner. This is one of his stand-alone novels. Great suspense and very good plot.Back Cover Blurb:Jeff Talley left his high-stress job with the LAPD where he failed to prevent a man from killing his family and then himself. Talley takes the chief-of-police job in a sleepy, affluent suburb, but he is soon plunged back into the high-pressure world he left behind when three young men, fleeing a robbery, burst into a home and take the family hostage. For Talley, the nightmare has barely begun. Because this isn't just any house. It belongs to an accountant who launders money for L.A.'s renegade Mafia family - and they don't want the police involved.....

Genre: Crime/thrillerSetting: Californian suburb, USANo. of pages: 385Part of a series: noThis is a standalone crime thriller from author Robert Crais, who has been delighting fans for years with many books featuring his detective duo of Elvis Cole and Joe Pike. This book follows Jeff Talley, an ex SWAT and hostage negotiator, who after a boy dies on his watch decides to take the sleepy backwater job of police chief in a quiet Californian suburb. Nothing ever happens there, until one nightmare day when armed robbers break into a house and hold the people inside hostage....That short synopsis gives away a lot less than what's on the back of the book - be warned. There's a lot more to the story, several excellent plots fused together to make so much more than your average crime novel. The character of Jeff Talley is a well drawn character, with a believable back story. All of the other characters are convincing too, the bit part characters are not your usual cardboard cut-outs. The writing is high quality without being overly descriptive, and the dialogue is very realistic. The chapters are quite short and snappy, which adds to the book's page turning qualities. I read this book in three days, and was late to work today because I just had to finish it.

I'm enjoying the presidential agent series. Like the first book, this one takes a long time to get there and it requires a lot of running around but ultimately it was well worth the read.

This book moved too fast to have any real character development or background. It seems that I just got to understand some things and the book was 2/3 of the way through. The multiple plot lines were interesting, but they seemed to be almost stepping over each other for prominence. There was the 3 hostage takers – losers filled with anger and one with psychosis. The three hostages, dad a mafia slave, the daughter an aspiring bimbo and the son a fat little brat with delusions of grandeur. The mafia guys – one trying to screw the other and keep this problem from getting out. Jeff Tally and his weird emotional problems that he can’t seem to get over. Hostage taker # 3 turning out not to be who he says but a serial killer on the run who kept his mother’s head around so she could ‘watch’ him commit crimes. The new, cold and controlling cop on the scene who takes over the site. Tally’s wife and kid snatched as an inducement for Jeff to cooperate with the thugs the mafia would send to get the disks out of the house. What I don’t undrstand is why the mob flipped out that the disks were there in the first place. They weren’t likely to be found or looked at no matter what so having to launch an attack to get them out. That was weird.
