THE PERFECT WITNESS by Iris Johansen is a high-stakes psychological thriller with secrets and suspense, while not knowing who is trustworthy.

Teresa Casali discovered at a young age she had a strange gift, being able to read someone’s memories. Instead of feeling like a gift, it was more of a curse, to her mob boss dad, Antonio, using her for his own use in the world of violence and corruption.

Her father, was gunned down by his rival, Rico Camano while he used his daughter to help eliminate potential enemies. Camano wants to kill her to keep her quiet. Teresa’s mother, Gina, has betrayed her by telling Camano that Teresa was at their cabin.

At age sixteen, Teresa is shot by a man and as she is trying to escape, she is rescued by a man she does not trust, Andre Mandak, killing the men who were trying to get to her. He tells her he will get her into the Witness Protection program, and moves her to Arizona where she is to become Allie Girard, a new identity. She lives with a couple and they are nice to her treating her like part of the family.

Now as time goes on and all is well, until her records have been compromised and now she has to run for her life, with Mandak. This time she utilizes her gift to help save herself and Mandak and put an end to the madness, while a relationship develops between the two.

My first book by this author, and while it had some elements of adventure, you were not sure who could be trusted. I did not completely connect with the characters, so was not blown away; however, will try another read by this author.

I did not care for the narrator, Elisabeth Rodgers for the audiobook, and feel a different narrator, with a stronger voice, would have offered a better overall experience and my rating may have been different.

It looks like this book has lots of critics. I am not one of them. This is the first book that I can recall reading by this author. Perhaps that is why I found it to be a fast moving and exciting read with a touch of romance thrown in. Thankfully it wasn't the focus of the book. I found myself wanting to get back to this story when I wasn't reading it which is a pretty good indicator for me that I'm enjoying the book. The ending may have been a bit predictable, but it at least wasn't disappointing. This is a good distraction read that would probably be enjoyed as much by men as women. It was not a chick book in spite of the romance. Read the reviews and decide if you want to give it a go, but I will recommend this title.
