Likable characters! I have read the BOI series and was introduced to Mike Brown in those books. So good to finally get his back story and meet new characters.

This was one of my highly anticipated reads of this year because I simply adore the Cindy Gerard BOI series. After meeting Primetime in Joe's book, I obviously wanted to see more.. I always love to see a cocky, good-looking man meet his match :) Though the start was so slow I was tempted to put it down, it started to heat up around 20% in and fast became the book I expected. It was full of action, passion and characters that grab you into their tales. I loved both Primetime and Eva ... I never should have doubted a suspense writer as fabulous as Cindy Gerard.

Man, I love love love Cindy Gerard's books, and this one was no exception. The suspense was fun and exciting and the H/h were HOT and totally kickass. This was the kick-off to a related series, The One-Eyed Jacks (how is that for a killer cool name?!), with the pilot Mike Brown as our Hero. Of course, he is haunted by his past as a military pilot in Afghanistan when some bad stuff went down and most of his team was killed. Then he meets his nemesis....uhh, I mean, love interest, Eva. She's got her own issues with what went down in Afghanistan and she's out to find answers, no matter what it takes. Naturally, sparks and hormones begin to explode all around them as they meet in a bar-it gets pretty messy actually. And oh, soooo much fun!

Anyway, I had a blast reading this, as ya'll can probably tell. Can't wait for the next adventure.

Kat's ARe Cafe Staff Pick for the week of 2/24/13.

Killing Time is fast-paced and thrilling, I literally finished it in a few days because I wanted to know what would happen. Hero Mike Brown is tortured by past conflicts and compelled to revisit the pain despite his desire to escape. The tension between him and Eva, who wants the truth, is palpable. I enjoyed it.

This review was originally posted on my blog.

A sizzling, sexy, heart-thumping, action-packed, knuckle-biting story from one of the best writers of romantic suspense. As a fan of her other series with the same attributes, Bodyguards and Black Ops Inc., this first book in her new series is everything I expected it would be, and maybe a little more. Cindy Gerard delivers sexy hot heroes who deal with danger easily and efficiently, and heroines who are their equal in many ways, and bring about a sense of calm in the chaos. It's hard not to fall in love with her characters because they're perfect as much as they are flawed. We cheer for them, we cry for them, and for a short period of time, they're all ours to enjoy.

You don't have to have read the other series in order to jump into this book and understand who is who or what they do, but it might help. There are familiar names and faces that pop up – to my utter delight, Gabe makes quite a few appearances in this book. If you don't know who Gabe is, Gabriel 'Archangel' Jones, read his story in Show No Mercy (Black Ops Inc. #1).

The blurb (taken from Goodreads) sums up the book perfectly, so I'll just dive into my review. This book started of really strong and just kept going, and going, and going. I absolutely love strong heroines who have a bit of Lara Croft in them – I mean the kicking butt and handling guns like a pro. If that isn't enough to turn on a Spec Ops soldier then what is?

Even though Mike and Eva get off to a rather rough start, their chemistry is undeniable and a constant source of hot looks and quite a few hilarious dialogs. Mike is cheeky, cocky, and a smarta$$, and I loved him for it. But Eva can give it back just as good, and she does. Quite often.
"I've been out of it for eight years, thank you very much."
"No, you've been hiding out. Big difference. Grow a pair, Brown. It's past time."
He opened his mouth. Shut it. Whipped his head toward the opposite window and clamped his fingers around his thighs to keep from clamping them around her throat.
There were so many great moments of comedic relief during tense moments.
He groped around in the dark and finally found his pants, dragged them on, then walked quietly out of the room. Once outside, he leaned back against the door, made a gun out of his index finger and thumb, pointed it at his temple, and pulled the trigger.

She scowled. “What did you expect? That I'd fall apart and start crying for my mommy?”
Actually I thought I might do that. I still might. Hold me?”

I guess they even rubbed off on Gabe, or marriage has mellowed him out because even got in on it at least once.  My point is, you feel like you're there and a part of the moment.

Where this story really shines is the plot. What starts out as a mission to unearth the truth of what really happened in Afghanistan all those years ago, and clear Mike's name; it turns out there is so much more at stake – together they infiltrate a terrorist camp disguised as a cult, Eva learns a painful truth, Mike learns an awful betrayal, but gains the trust back of two brothers in arms, and somewhere along the way, Eva and Mike both discover love and trust. I couldn't put this book down once I got started. If this is any indication of how the rest of the series will go, I will undoubtedly be devouring every single one of them. This series is not to be missed if you love military heroes and strong, compelling plots. I most definitely and highly recommend this book, or any book penned by the brilliant Cindy Gerard.

Disclaimer: I won an ARC copy from the author in a giveaway. A review in exchange for the ARC was not promised.

Just finished reading. I so enjoy Ms. Gerard's imaginative and detailed stories. When I finish one of her books, I grimace thinking about having to wait for the next in the series to be released. But, isn't that actually good? I think so.While this story has ties to her last series "Black Ops, Inc.," it successfully charts the way to a new series titled the "One-Eyed Jacks." If you are new to Cindy Gerard's writing, this book serves well as a great place to start. Having read prior "BOI" books is not necessary to understand and enjoy this one.FYI: the only reason I deducted 1/2 star from my rating is that some of the storyline was not the surprise for the reader, that it was for the characters. Still an immensely worthwhile read.

Killing Time by Cindy Gerard is a romantic suspense novel, published in January,2013 with 420 pages and published by Pocket books/ Simon and Schuster.Eight years ago in Afghanistan, Operation Slam Dunk went terribly awry. People were killed and Mike Brown was blamed because he disobeyed a directed order. He was given a dishonorable discharge. Now he runs a shady cargo business in Peru. One night out of the year, Mike falls off the wagon and gets drunk and remembers the men that were lost eight years ago.Eva Salinas lost her husband in Operation Slam Dunk. She has believed the reports about Mike Brown and so she follows Mike to Peru, drugs him and ties him up and demands answers. When the two of them start talking , Eva realizes she misjudged Mike. But, they still don't really know what went wrong eight years ago. When Eva shares her information with Mike they discover a plot that involves a crazy militia group and a dangerous drug cartel. They also discover an undeniable attraction to each other. This is the first book in the One Eyed Jack series. The book starts off with a bang and never slows down. I love military guys and the loyalty they have for their teams and their families. I also like a strong female character that isn't bowled over by the alpha male type. Eva is a smart lawyer and doesn't back down when the going gets tough. I thought she and Mike were perfectly paired. The action and suspense was tense and absorbing, making it impossible to put the book down. There was also an emotional aspect to the story when the remaining members of Mike's team was informed of the conspiracy. In the end the story all came together for the perfect HEA!This one gets an A-Thanks to Edelwiess for the advance copy.

Killing Time.........by Cindy GerardThis is the first novel of a series called One Eyed Jacks, and it is classic Cindy Gerard.Mike Brown was a Naval Academy graduate and hot shot Helo pilot in Afghanistan, until eight years ago when a mission went very wrong. Since then he has been hiding out in Peru, running a semi-legitimate air cargo business . He has cut himself off from his former life, and is sober 364 days of the year...except on the anniversary of the disaster that ended his career. We meet Mike in a bar on that anniversary, and he is definitely NOT sober.Mike is being seduced by this drop-dead gorgeous Latino woman who is pulling his every string! That is till she gets him someplace " private" sticks a needle in his neck, and he wakes up shackled to a bed! Meet Eve Salinas. She is an attorney with CIA connections investigating the mission gone bad. She is also the widow of one of the men who died.It is a ride in a tornado from there. First they have to learn to trust each other, not an easy thing. People want them dead, someone from the Government included. There is so much action, and suspense I found my self holding my breath at one point. The attraction between Mike and Eve is so very hot, and so hard to deny, though they both try to. Mike and Eve have to fight their own demons to get to a place they can be together. We meet a few of the BOI men, and they look like they will be regulars in this series. Very happy about that! I would highly recommend this novel to all Cindy Gerard fans, and anyone who likes military romantic suspense. This one is a keeper.Pat FordyceI received this ARC from Edelweiss for an honest review.
