- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5What a great book! I couldn't put it down. It is exciting from beginning to end, with lots of action and twists. The relationship between Nathan and Shea is very believable. And again I love the interaction between the brothers. Can't wait to read the next one.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Whispers in the Dark by Maya Banks4th book in the KGI series. Paranormal (psychic healing) romantic suspense. Can be read as a stand-alone but better is you know some of the series concepts. Nathan Kelly is a captive being tortured for information when he hears a voice assuring him that he’s not alone. She telepathically helps take his pain and keep his sanity. After he is able to escape, Nathan tracks his helper down and ends up helping Shea find her sister and save them both from a dangerous situation. Intense and a bit violent, but overall a great romantic suspense novel. I enjoyed the drama of it all. I started with book 4 because it was a bookclub read and feel like I would have appreciated the clandestine organization more if I’d read one or more of the earlier KGI books. I will go back and read them at some point. The whole psychic thing has always been a favorite troupe of mine. Maybe close enough to reality that it could exist?

4.5 Stars
Warning: Paranormal elements have been added in this installment and continue into the next book. So, if PNR is not your thing don't say you weren't warned.
Personally, these elements add to rather than detract from the story. They are very well integrated and have a logical (at least for me) explanation. They also contribute significantly to the intensity of the bond between Nathan and Shea.
Shea and Nathan are an amazing couple - from their personal strength and resilience to their complete acceptance of each other, scars and all, to their determination to overcome all obstacles - the relationship between them makes for excellent reading.
Although the suspense plot is not all that original, it is still clever and well written with some excellent action scenes.
Once again, the dynamic amongst the Kelly clan is a highlight. The unconditional support given to both Nathan and Shea from both the brothers and sisters-in-law is emotional and engaging.
Grace and Rio's book is next and I look forward to it. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A really creative story with a very powerful beginning and such a strong bond between hero and heroine. Again the closeness of the KGI family in the series is so enjoyable. While Nathan is being tortured as a prisoner of war Shea reaches him telepathically to give him encouragement.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I like this series a lot. Contemporary, hot military guys, current events, close family ties, & a damsel in distress. I was looking forward to seeing MIA Nathan & finding out what happened to him but was really disappointed in the introduction of the paranormal/sci if element. It just doesn't seem to fit This series & I found the instant acceptance of the Heroines talents & story by all these good old Tennessee military guys implausible! Oh you were created in a lab? Sure you were! Oh you can heal remotely? Great! Plus the way one of the plot lines was cleared up at the end made the Heroine look like a complete moron! so she didn't know taking another person's pain & even their injuries was "healing" them?!? & shadowy govt baddies would want her as much as her sister? Really? Come on!
Ugh! I may have just talk myself into downgrading this a star to 2. I did like the H/h psychic connection & how Nathan felt such a deep soul connection to Shea. But everything could have happened & been the same with her just being telepathic & without the paranormal crap. Making it completely unnecessary. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I'm not a big fan of paranormal stuff, but I most confess that I loved this book. Maya Banks delivered an intense story, full of action and some "sci-fi" things, but, all in all, I did love the way things turned out.I did not expect some turns in the story, like Resnick and Rio, and they got me thinking and now I'm waiting anxiously to read the rest. One thing that I did love was the way that Nathan and Shea communicated; one could only hope that mind reading/talking was real...it sure come in handy sometimes.Of all the books so far, I believe that this was the most intense in the way of feelings; the characters are broken, in despair, without hope and still they continue on because they need one another and their connection. It's intense.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Whispers in the Dark, released on January 2012.Love this series. This book picks up where the last one left off. Nathan didn't get away and he's being tortured. Shea Petersen connects with him through his mind. She feels what he feels and he's about to just give up. She keeps him strong. Her sister Grace has abilities also and she fears they will capture her and draw Shea out. As she runs for her life she also tries to help him, encourage him that he wants to live.Back at the family compound we are able to catch up with the others lives. He is able to talk to Rachel who survived a year in Columbia as a prisoner. Nathan leaves to find her and learns of her past...Swanney, Nathan's war buddy who also went through being a prisoner hooks up with the Kelly gang and proceed to help Nathan and Shea. They tell her of a family secret and it relieves her and then leaves her with many more questions.Recovery involves the woman of the family and I'm glad they have the answer. Hot steamy sex scenes.I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Let me start by saying that I'd never read a Maya Banks book until I started the KGI series and I loved books 1-3. I have to also say that I'm not against paranormal romance, I quite like it actually. My problem with this book is that on books 1-3 we got a romantic suspense/military romance then suddenly book 4 (and acocording to spoilers book 5) are boom! paranormal romance. Personally, if I'm reading a series that is romantic suspense, I want it to stay romantic suspense and not be bringing in other genres... espescially, *especially* paranormal romance. If I'd read this book as a stand alone, I'd probably gone 3.5 to 4 stars because to me a lot of the telepathic conversations and a lot of the dealings with the family were just unnecessary fluff (for those of us who've read books 1-3, we kinda got the hint that they are a close knit family and once you're accepted as family, nobody can mess with you). I did find myself really liking a new character introduced in this book (Swanny) and I'm hoping that he eventually gets his own book as he intrigued me in this one.
All in all this book (and if spoilers of book 5 are correct, the same will hold true for it) is not a book that I was thrilled to be reading, but a part of the path to the rest of the books that I know that are coming in the series. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I was looking forward to this one so much! But I have to admit, it wasn't as good for me as the previous book. I got bored with all the "Oh I can't involve him and his family in my troubles" angst from the heroine. And the love scenes got repetitious as well. But don't get me wrong! I did enjoy the story, it was great catching up with Garrett, Van, Sam and the rest of the family. And the suspense stuff was fun too, even though the plot did seem a bit contrived. Hopefully the next book will blow me away. I'm certainly looking forward to finding out.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Excellent, if a little predictable, I liked this story about a man who is in enemy hands trying to escape, and he does escape in his mind into the mind of a woman who can help, she eases his pain and helps him cope. Although it puts her at risk she sends some emails that help him be rescued. After he escapes he has to learn to live again, he's not sure if she was a figment of his imagination until she needs his help. Then suddenly he has to come to terms with his feelings for her and what this could do to his future. It's a good paranormal story, I liked the main characters and their interactions.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I really like this series. However I have a problem with writers throwing in ESP type stuff just because it's a hot seller right now. Nothing in the first 3 books gave a hint of parapsychology.
It was a great read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think a lot of couples would love to have the connection Nathan and Shea have. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Maya Banks latest addition to the KGI series is every bit as exciting as the previous three books. Whispers in the Dark found me frequently holding my breath and reading as fast as I could, I absolutely loved it. Waiting for book five will be a painful exercise in anticipation.
