This is my favourite book by Mary Burton. There was a complex story line, with plenty of suspense and a surprise ending. Also, the characters were believable. I'd recommend this to others, as a book worth reading.

Wow, this book grabbed me from the first and was so hard to put down. The characters drew me in and kept me guessing through most of the book. One of the best mysteries I've read for a while.Great job.

I really enjoyed this tale, even though there is nothing sci-fi or timey-wimey, Mary Burton's flavor of writing was very enjoyable. There were a few things that ever so slightly bugged me, but they were probably things that I misunderstood. It's hayfever season - plain old walking is hard for me to understand.

The characters were interesting to get to know, and the time spent with them was enjoyable. I'll be reading more of Mary Burton.

Reviewed by: AprilBook provided by: NegalleyReview originally posted at Romancing the BookPulse-pounding and intense, The Seventh Victim is an amazing ride from beginning to end! With an excellent blend of romantic suspense and a dash of psychological twists, Mary Burton does a wonderful job of bringing an intensity and depth to this amazing story. Imagine being the only victim targeted by a serial killer who survives. Imagine the terror of living with this knowledge day after day after day. Imagine having your memories of the attack so deeply hidden that you have no idea if the next person you meet on the street was your attacker and is coming back to finish what he started. This is what Lara Church has lived with for the past seven years. She has been constantly on the run, settling nowhere and committing her life to her art: taking photographs of murder scenes. All of that changes, however, with the death of her Grandmother and she finds herself in Austin, Texas living in her Grandmother’s house and working a job as a photography teacher. When young women begin turning up murdered Lara knows that her time is ticking away and she must unearth her memories before more innocent women are killed – and before the killer comes to complete what he started seven years ago.I really enjoyed Mary Burton’s writing style in The Seventh Victim. She does an excellent job of bringing the characters to life, allowing readers to connect to them and actually feel for and with them. Lara is a very stubborn and strong-minded person who insists that she can take care of herself. Texas Ranger, James Beck has other ideas, however, that do not fall into line with Lara’s ideas. When bodies begin turning up, Beck knows that Lara can help solve the case if she could only remember what happened that night long ago, and he will stop at nothing to get her to try everything possible to remember. With constant action and twists and turns, The Seventh Victim was a very quick read for me that kept my attention from beginning to end. The slight romance between Lara and James was a nice added shadow to the story, while the intensity of finding the killer before it was too late was enough to keep me glued to the pages. I also loved the secondary characters that really lent an extra dimension to the story. While I did have the killer figured out pretty early on in the story, there was an incredible twist that I completely did not see coming. I loved how the author did this, creating shock value as well as intrigue. I have read other books by Ms. Burton and truly enjoy her writing style, characterization and her ability to draw me into the story and the setting. She truly has a talent for romantic suspense and I highly recommend The Seventh Victim to anyone looking for a great read in that genre!

My rating: 4 of 5 starsThe Seventh Victim by Mary Burton is a 2013 Zebra/ Kensington publication. Seven years ago Lara Church was attacked and nearly strangled to death by the Seattle strangler. She doesn't remember anything about the attack, even after being harrassed unto death by Mike Raines, a dectective on the Seattle police force, and after seeing countless doctors. Lara goes on the run and finally has settled in Austin, Texas. Her grandmother has passed away and Lara has inherited her property. Taking a job at the local university as a photography teacher she also does her own peculiar photography of crime scenes. Now there have been several murders that mimic the Seattle strangler exactly. The case goes to James Beck, a Texas Ranger. It comes to his attention right away that Lara Church, the only survivor of the strangler now lives in Austin. James wants Lara to see a doctor in Austin to see if her memory can be unlocked. The two clash because Lara wants to be left alone, but James won't let it go. James comes to believe that the killer will eventually target Lara and she is the key to catching the killer. Added to the mix is Mike Raines who has retired from the Seattle police force and started his own security company. He is also in Austin to help James find the killer, even if James doesn't initially welcome his input. This is a dark serial killer mystery thriller. Lara's obsession with crime scenes, the creepy serial killer MO, the ever present tension of waiting for something bad to happen to Lara and maybe to other characters we come to care about. There is also the tension from the relationship between James and Lara. James comes on too strong, often forgetting that Lara is a victim ,not just a person that could help crack a case. Although she wants to help, she simply can't remember anything, which is just as frustrating to her as it is to the investigators.Eventually, James begins to respect Lara a great deal and the ice between them begins to melt. There are a lot of twist and turns in this one. The last quarter of the book is really, really tense. The romance part of the book is reserved for the proper time and place in the book and is not the primary focus of the book. Overall this one gets an A. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC

Lara Church has been on the run for seven years. Unfortunately she doesn't remember who she's running from since she can't remember her attacker. She has spent the past seven years crisscrossing the country, never spending more than six months in any one location. The only thing that ties her brief stays anywhere is murder. Lara was the seventh victim of the Seattle Strangler and the only one to survive. Now the strangler seems to be making a reappearance in Austin. Will Lara run again? How do you run when you don't know who you're running from?Fortunately for Lara, she has the Texas Rangers on her side in the form of James Beck and Rick Santos. These Rangers are driven and simply will not stop until they've solved the case. Just to shake things up a bit, a former Seattle detective shows up and wants to help solve the case. Add in an art show featuring Lara's photographs of death scenes, her willing exposure as the last surviving victim of the Seattle Strangler, mutual attraction between Lara and Ranger Beck, and the anniversary of Lara's survival in Seattle and you've got the makings of one volatile romantic-suspense story . . . which is exactly what Ms. Burton has provided.I found all of the characters in The Seventh Victim to be very well developed and likeable. The settings and action are realistic and well described. James Beck is somewhat stubborn and single-minded when it comes to his cases. Lara Church is stubborn when it comes to her art. Former Seattle police detective Mike Raines is, by all appearances, just as stubborn when it comes to solving the case of the Seattle Strangler. But all is not what it appears and the little twists and turns in the story are what made for an engrossing read. The Seventh Victim wasn't a quick or easy read, primarily because of the subject matter (rape, murder and even child abuse), but I was simply unable to put the book down once I started reading. If you enjoy suspense stories with a mix of romance, then you may want to add The Seventh Victim to your reading list.

This one had me fooled, a story where the seventh victim of a serial killer, who somehow survives, finds herself having to face some of her demons when women where she lives now start dying in the same ways she nearly died. I was reading it, enjoying myself and patting myself on the back for guessing from the clues who dunnit when the author pulled one out of the left field and made me gasp, it was a pleased gasp as an author surprised me and had me at the edge of the seat, cause it was once again open to interpretation as to if characters would survive. The romance didn't have a great buildup but overall it was a good read and I would recommend it.
