About this audiobook

Bloodier than Fried Green Tomatoes!
Funnier than The Texas Chainsaw Massacre!

Welcome to Gil's All Night Diner, where zombie attacks are a regular occurrence and you never know what might be lurking in the freezer. . .

Duke and Earl are just passing through Rockwood county in their pick-up truck when they stop at the Diner for a quick bite to eat. They aren't planning to stick around-until Loretta, the eatery's owner, offers them $100 to take care of her zombie problem. Given that Duke is a werewolf and Earl's a vampire, this looks right up their alley.

But the shambling dead are just the tip of a particularly spiky iceberg. Seems someone's out to drive Loretta from the Diner, and more than willing to raise a little Hell on Earth if that's what it takes. Before Duke and Earl get to the bottom of the Diner's troubles, they'll run into such otherworldly complications as undead cattle, an amorous ghost, a jailbait sorceress, and the terrifying occult power of pig-latin. And maybe--just maybe--the End of the World, too.

Gory, sexy, and flat-out hilarious, Gil's All Fright Diner will tickle your funnybone--before ripping it out of its socket!

Fast paced romp of a comedic thriller. Duke the Werewolf and Earl the Vampire stop at Gil's All Night Diner for gas on their way to parts unkown. Here they meet up with Loretta, the tough as nails waitress/fry cook/ owner of the Diner. She doesn't bat an eye when a zombie horde comes crashing through her front door - just fires off round after round of shotgun blasts, taking care of the problem. Our story takes off as Duke and Earl decided to help Loretta take care of her supernatural pests, not knowing that they are going to be caught in a life and death struggle to save the world from Armageddon. This book was a fun comic romp that was quick and easy to read. The main characters are very likeable and there is a plenty of steamy (if comic) romance and lots of action. Recommend to readers who enjoy the supernatural but aren't looking for anything super heavy.

Great Story. Great Storytelling. I always look for novels, movies, etc., that are somehow similar to Shaun of The Dead. Real horrific problems, solved with a mixture of comedy and great characters. Gil's All Fright Diner does not disappoint.

This reminded me a lot of the Hunter Hunterson stories by Scott Sigler, but Sigler does it better. Don't get me wrong. This was an enjoyable quick book with oddly charming characters. Although the characters are very single-dimensional and not much growth.

Content Warning: There is graphic descriptions of older men sexualizing younger women, well... one woman. And a lot of blatant sexism. It isn't necessarily part of the story, but it is included.

You might enjoy this book if you like modern/updated stories of classical monster tropes or slightly humorous lite urban fantasy. Similar in style to a Christopher Moore book. The narration of the audiobook was done well and it was easy to distinguish the various characters in the book.

It was entertaining, I giggled some. Not a book for people who can't handle cussing and dirty minded people. I gave 4 stars only because whenever a spell was cast it was in pig Latin and found it annoying.

This is a very fun humor/horror book. Duke, a truck driving werewolf, and Earl, a scientologist vampire, wind up at Gil's All Night Diner just as someone is attempting to call the old gods back to Earth, and Gil's seems to be the center of all the weirdness.

A.Lee Martnez erschafft immer wieder sehr eigene Figuren, die ihresgleichen suchen. Und immer schafft er es, auch die seltsamsten Typen so zu gestalten, dass man sie einfach ins Herz schließt, wie ungewöhnlich sie auch auf den ersten Blick zu sein scheinen.

In this very funny look at vampires, werewolves and various other forms of the not quite dead A. Lee Martinez gives us Texas style fantasy with big, fun characters and a nice plot. I love the way that ordinary people react as if it's perfectly normal to have zombie cows.

Gil's All Fright Diner is a hilarious romp into the supernatural. Meet Earl the vampire, Duke the 800 pound werewolf, and Cathy the lonely ghost as they fight zombies, an evil teenage witch and Armageddon itself at an all night diner in the middle of the desert. What makes this book of supernatural terrors so funny? Picture Earl the vampire with his bad comb over and worn out overalls, and 800 pound ex-truck driver Duke with his bushy hair exploding out of his truck driver hat. Now listen in as they squabble like an old married couple about EVERYTHING. Hang out with Loretta, the plus size woman who runs the diner despite nightly visits by ghouls. Go the rounds with the Sheriff, Marshall Kop, as he tries to keep the peace in his small desert town despite the mayhem created by zombie cows run amok. So, does good triumph over evil and is the world saved from Armageddon? I can't tell you that! It would spoil the fun!If you like Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels, you'll probably have a screamingly good time reading Gil's All Fright Diner.

What a fun, cthulian, horror-themed, fantasy novel. It stays on just the right side of camp, and it's really quite sweet. Also, there's plenty of Lovecraft influence. Hooray for tentacles and whimsy.

Gil's All Fright Dinerby A. Lee MartinezI had to re-read this! It had been years and I ran across it and it just felt right to read it again! It just love Earle and Duke, the crazy vampire and werewolf duo. They stop at a diner on their way to nowhere and find trouble. They stay to help out. Ghouls, zombies, and dark magic are some of the things they have to fight! Even zombie cows! Lol!The plot, characters, dialogue, world building are all hilarious and terrific! One of my favorite books for it's dark humor and overall silliness!

what a weird, funny little book! I love this author's style, and his characters are more real, and fresh than anything that's come along lately, especially in this genre. I didn't really like the fat-slurs against the lead female in the book, and would not recommend this to young adults because there are some barely described sex-scenes - kinda-sorta. But it was a quick, fun read. A real nice change of pace from all the seriousness in the world. I sure hope he writes more!!

Earl and Duke, a redneck vampire and werewolf duo, pull into a diner on a dusty desert road and find themselves in the middle of strange doings involving zombies, ghosts, and apocalypse-craving elder gods. This is very much a horror-comedy, something I love when it's done right, but which can be difficult to pull off. I'm not sure this one quite hits the sweet spot between the two genres consistently. Certainly not as well as the same author did in blending pulp SF and noir detective genres in The Automatic Detective, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The humor is sometimes funny and clever, and sometimes just kind of silly. The horror isn't necessarily scary, but it does do a nice job of putting its own stamp on some familiar tropes (although I could have done without the evil sexy teenage sexpot who manipulates people with sex), and there are some very well-done cinematic-feeling descriptions of monsters and supernatural happenings.Really, it's mostly just trying to be fun, and while it's not perfect, it succeeds reasonably well. Not a must-read for comedy-horror fans, but not a disappointment, either. If there was a sequel -- and the ending, while it's definitely an ending, is certainly left open for one -- I would probably read it.

I got to page 106 and gave up. I just did not care for these characters at all. First off there is a young teen girl having sex with anyone she can to manipulate them. Then the fat werewolf and the balding comb-over vampire are on her list, she is 17 ? YUCK !

I like the sci-fi mixed with humor in his writing. I like the ridiculous story ideas and how things turn out usually I'm too wound up in the story to even try to figure out what is going to happen next. If you like silly yet sci-fi/fantasy novels this is a definite must.

I read his 6th book, "Monster" and decided to try another. I loved this one too!! Its labeled YA but this OA doesn't think it fair to limit it. Also in my sensitive OA mind, some of the sexual situations seemed a bit mature for YA. It has an atypical vampire, overweight werewolf, zombies, ghouls, all sorts of interesting small town characters, a fight to save the world and a romance between a vampire and a ghost. I'm not sure if it was intentional, but in my mind the vampire and werewolf's names seemed opposite and I had to remind myself who was who (a minor detail). This scenario, delivered in comical, flowing style, made it makes it impossible to do anything but devour the book. Fortunately, the author has at least five more meals for me to savor.

Good lord, that was bad. But I can understand why some like it. The humour, frivolity and flippant nature of the characters towards all things supernatural just wasn't to my taste. Where were the disbelievers, those ignorant of the paranormal or the crazy fist-shaking fanatics hell-bent on ridding the world of evil doers?

Everything was designed to be quirky, to draw a laugh or a smile from the reader. From the melodramatic evil Lolita determined to take over the world any way possible, seducing and killing her way to her goal, to declarations that the world's about to end and the requisite tentacled monster. Basically it's a parody of old-style rural horror with a modern twist.

The zombie cows and turkeys were new and exciting but in general the humour didn't get many laughs from me. The two months of reading this hasn't been fun. I'm not sure why I forced myself to finish it today but I did it. Hallelujah.

If you like or are in the mood for an ultra lite camp and goofy horror in the same vein as Shaun of the Dead (which is much better than this book) or the Scary Movie franchise then you'll probably enjoy this.

I'm not in the habit of rereading books which I feel sad saying. I like to wait until I've forgotten as much as possible about it before reading it a second time so that I don't feel like I have precognitive abilities. A. Lee Martinez and his entire series of books is the exception, however. I originally checked out his books from my local library and upon picking up the first was immediately hooked. Recently I saw several at a bookstore and snatched them up. This book is very funny, the characters entertaining and I would absolutely recommend it to friends.

Gil's All Fright Diner - the title makes you think WTF is this? - and that cover! I admit that is why I bought it. Come on just look at that baby - There is a huge one eyed monster coming out of that Diner! I love monsters. As soon as I saw it I was like "Oh jeezuz I have to read this!" Maybe thats just me but I'm a total cover whore and I never can tell what I'm going to be attracted to. One thing for sure this had just the right amount of playful and monster for me, and not your atypical traits that you would normally associate with the paranormal creatures that are so popular right now.

I considered this a paranormal comedy (maybe its a spoof or parody I don't know) but whatever it is - it was exactly my cup of tea. Our two heroes, Duke and Earl - a werewolf and Vampire, heck if you could even call them heroes haha - are the saddest examples of the famed werewolf and vampire species I have ever read and yet they were PERFECT! Imagine a redneck and you have Duke (werewolf),then picture a greasy dirty looking guy no one wants to date because he just looks that sketchy and that's Earl (vampire). Toss some zombies in the mix and how could I not love that? Yes I know zombies are a bit overdone these days but this isn't about zombies they are just the bonus cream on top of this pie in your face full of laughs. Plus I have a thing for zombies, I can't seem to get enough.

What works is the crazy teenage girl with visions of grandeur and taking over the world trying to call some pretty nasty funk into our reality. She has a her horny lapdog of a boyfriend who will do anything for her...most likely just for a bit of a hump. But the world could come to an end and our unlikely pair has what it takes.

There is even a tad bit of romance in here for you folks who like a little bit of star crossed love. That's right I'm talking ghosts and flesh - how the hell is that going to work out? It just does.

This one will give you some damn good laughs and some 'ah shucks that sweet Wilbur' type moments. Alls well that ends well I say and I walked away wanting more. I will be looking into more of this A.Lee Martinez!

All my GR friends really enjoyed this but I just can't get into it. There are some funny things like turning the whole dark and dangerous and mysterious vampire and werewolf tropes on their supernatural ears. But what emerges are caricatures of a b movie action comedy. While I can picture a middle aged potbellied werewolf, a scared, whiny, sniveling, ineffectual little vampire is too much for me to buy and hell he is annoying. Other than him, so far everyone in this books is either fat (and this fact is very explicitly pointed out) or a hot teen. I get that Martinez is making fun of the genre but I just can't do another teenager infested supernatural fest. When the vampire has to control himself when a 17-year-old vamps for him (pun intended) I was done.

Earl, a somewhat scrawny 90-something-year-old vampire; and Duke, his buddy the beer-bellied werewolf, are just about out of gas and out of cash when they pull their beat-up pick-up into the parking lot of Gil’s All Night Diner. Not long after they sit down and Duke orders grilled cheese and chili, a horde of decaying zombies swarm the place. Between the two of them (and with a little help from the diner’s owner and her shotgun) the walking corpses are easily dispatched…but Loretta, the owner, is sick of the undead infestation and hire the two to help her figure out where the corpses keep coming from and why. It’s a cinch to trace the zombies to the local graveyard and work a little magic to stop them from rising, but it’s a bit more difficult to figure out who’s raising them in the first place and what deeper motivations they might have. Meanwhile, oversexed and overmagicked local teen Tammy…known to her cult of one as Mistress Lilith…and Chad, her loyal but dumb sole cult member and boyfriend…are frustrated by Earl and Duke’s presence in town. Earl and Duke and their various paranormal skills are now all that’s keeping Tammy from getting inside Gil’s All Night Diner and working the spells to raise the Old Gods and unleash hell on earth. Fast-paced, quirky, and just as much fun as it sounds, “Gil’s All Fright Diner” is a delightfully irreverent take on vampires, werewolves, and magic. Urban fantasy at its most rollicking!

Gil's All Fright Diner was not laugh out loud funny, as I was expecting it to be. And that is odd, given that the book is well written, has a good story line, and is ludicrously absurd. A flip flop wearing vampire named Earl (who my mind cast as Steve Buscemi right off the bat) travel's in a beat up pickup truck with a fat overalls wearing werewolf named Duke. They stop at Gil's diner for a bite to eat in the middle of the night, and the diner is immediately attacked by zombies. This begins the story, in which Earl and Duke are the heroes, and a cute 17 year old girl is the purely evil villain. She takes her witchcraft very seriously. Other characters are also largely on the supernatural side, with the diner's owner, the sheriff, and the witch's dumb jock lackey being about the only purely human characters in the book.It is a light, quick, fun book, and it has some humorous episodes (zombie cows being my favorite.) Any fan of horror novels should get a kick out of it.
