About this audiobook

Stephen King presents “a fresh adrenaline rush of terror” (People) in this electrifying #1 New York Times bestseller!

The new minister came to Harlow, Maine, when Jamie Morton was a boy doing battle with his toy army men on the front lawn. The young Reverend Charles Jacobs and his beautiful wife brought new life to the local church and captivated their congregation. But with Jamie, he shares a secret obsession—a draw so powerful, it would have profound consequences five decades after the shattering tragedy that turned the preacher against God, and long after his final, scathing sermon. Now Jamie, a nomadic rock guitarist hooked on heroin, meets Charles Jacobs again. And when their bond becomes a pact beyond even the Devil’s devising, Jamie discovers that the word revival has many meanings….

I have come to expect a perfect landing by Stephen King. Not so here, and nothing ruins a beautifully written novel like a botched ending. Save yourself some time and disappointment, and give this one a miss.

I have read a lot of Stephen King novels in my day. I have become accustomed to them starting slowly with his character developments and back stories setting the stage for the meat of the story. Sometimes they seem rather mundane to me, but Mr. King usually rewards the patient reader. In "Revival," the whole story might be considered a "back story" as it told as a personal reflection by the main character, Jamie Morton.

Documenting his encounters with the Reverend Charles Jacobs, and in doing so telling his life story, Jamie Morton strives to get the story down in his waning years to inform the un-informed (we the constant reader) of things great and small regarding his interactions with the man referred to as his "fifth business." Starting in 1962 at age six, Jamie's dealings with Charles Jacobs are well documented. Along the way, we see Jamie grow through his teenage years, into adulthood, and on to his twilight years, spanning five decades.

Jamie tells of the time when Charles Jacobs was his pastor, Jacob's study of electricity and the healing of Jamie's brother, Jacob's fall from grace with the "terrible sermon," and the pastor's banishment from their church. In a normal life, most people would not have anything else to say about their ex-pastor. Stephen King does not write about normal lives, however. Jacob's pops into and out of Jamie's live several times, each time becoming a more bizarre encounter than the last and covering a good part of the United States. The climax takes place in the same Maine town where it all began, and has haunted Jamie to an extent to encourage him to tell the entire story. But just when I thought the bizarre elements to his story were complete, the ending drops a few more on the reader.

Though I do not agree with the vision of the events depicted in the climax, I realize that is not important in my liking or dis-liking the story. It is, after all, fiction and Stephen King can tell some whoppers. I found the build up to the climax entertaining as well, seeing Jamie as a flawed human being struggling with his demons, only to find worse ones in his final encounter with Pastor Charles. I have enjoyed most of the Stephen King novels I have read, and this is no exception. The ending was meant to shock the reader and had the desired effect on me. If you are a fan of Stephen King, or of the bizarre in general, then I heartily recommend "Revival" to you.

Classic King. If you loved Pet Sematary, and you love HP Lovecraft, this book is for you. Will haunt me for the rest of my life, indeed.

"Revival" by Stephen King is a captivating exploration of the murky intersection between science and spirituality. While not my top pick, the narrative, following protagonist Jamie Morton, held my interest with its dark examination of mortality and obsession. King's signature style weaves an atmospheric tale that, reminiscent of "Pet Sematary," delves into themes of grief. King, known for his deep exploration of this emotion in various stories, excels at making readers empathize with the characters. While not breaking new ground, "Revival" is an engaging journey for those intrigued by the mysterious and unsettling facets of human existence, with echoes of King's poignant exploration of grief seen in other works.

Pretty good minus the normalizing homosexuality. However, that is to be expected in a Stephen King book.

A great book about life, love, friendship and death. The less said about the plot specifics the better, I think. A really fine piece of work by Mr.King, following on the heels of the fantastic “Joyland.”
It would also be criminal not to mention the excellent narration by David Morse. I found myself gripped by this book in a way that only Kings best can do. Highly recommended.

The development of the characters and story was good, but the climax was ridiculous.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It has King's signature attention to detail, as well as some characters that hint at classic literature, but ask some interesting questions as well. The end was rather bleak, and it surprised me that it was so very bleak. Otherwise, I would have given it a higher rating.

It was a little too long in describing Jamie’s rock and roll years - I almost quit listening because it was drug out so long. Maybe if he developed another love interest…I wouldn’t read it again because it’s just too dark. David Morse did an excellent job in his narration.

By Stephen King’s high standards I did not feel that this was one of his best. Well written as always with the usual detail and descriptiveness that I love about Stephen King’s work. The plot was good but for some reason It did not resonate with me as much as many of his other books. If it was another author I would give it 4 stars but as it is SK I think a 3 because if his other work. I think most will enjoy this book.

The career of Jamie was interesting to follow and his reacquaintances with Jacob’s as a catalyst in his life was an effective device. But, the fantasy ending wasn’t necessary and compromised the overall experience. David Morse was great.

Still processing what I've read, and like so many other novels I've left rated but unreviewed, I plan to come back to this with a real review. For now I will say I was disappointed that my first Stephen King book was NOT SCARY AT ALL!!! It was creepy but not terrifying or nightmare-inducing...

There is not much surprise about where this book is headed — the reviewer who called it a shaggy-dog story isn't far off the mark — but there's a lot of pleasure in how much King enjoys his shaggy dog. Many familiar King tics and tropes, but everything's shot through with his fears about aging and death.

Not the book that's going to win over new fans, but if you're a King fan, it's a standout in his later career. (And no obvious Dark Tower connections, thankfully.)

Stephen King's novel Revival is what I'd call a slow burn. Covering themes of family, addiction and faith, Revival spans 50 years in the life of Jamie Morton and his priest, Reverend Jacobs.Reverend Jacobs is obsessed with the power of electricity and he discovers he has the power to heal people. But does he heal with faith or science or is the whole thing just a con?Although not a standout bestseller when compared to other novels in Stephen King's vast body of work, Revival contains an interesting plot exploring some big issues and showcasing some great writing along the way. Here's my favourite quote from page 60:"Her blond hair was underground now, growing brittle on a satin pillow in the dark." Oh my gosh, that still gives me the creeps! The best part of Revival was Jamie Morton's childhood growing up in New England. Stephen King has an unbeatable talent for writing young characters and the first quarter of the book had me chuckling and smiling, and the remainder of the book had me (and Jamie) yearning for the innocence of those early years.Promotional material claims Revival is a 'masterpiece from King, in the great American tradition of Frank Norris, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Edgar Allan Poe' although I'd have to disagree. Revival was an enjoyable story and a great page turner with a few flashes of brilliant writing, but it wasn't a knock-out for me.

I had to discard this one about halfway through. The writing was good and it has some interesting plot points, but it just took too long to get anywhere. I wanted to feel, if not scared, then at least unsettled by this point in the novel and it just didn't do that for me. I may revisit it again later and try to finish it as many reviewers think the ending is great.

I would like to mention that I was listening to the audio version and I love the reader, David Morse. He handled the different characters at different times in their lives wonderfully. His voice is probably the only reason I listened as long as I did.

I really enjoyed the first half, he could have ended it there and it would have been brilliant. But then again, I'm not into the supernatural so much.

Something happened...in the last 20 or so pages in the book and everything before it is a painfully slow build up to the final pages. Something mediocre happened at the end that left me feeling disappointed in Revival.
