About this audiobook

In Lisa Gardner’s second short story, after the New York Times bestseller The 7th Month, Detective D.D. Warren takes on her most intimidating assignment yet: a fifty-minute class meant to educate a horde of bloodthirsty thriller writers on the ways of actual police work. Yet sometimes life really does imitate fiction, as D.D. takes the writers through the reality of one of her most twisted cases—a case that involves a seedy motel room, drugs, prostitution…and a severed leg.

With Gardner’s trademark suspense, sharp observations, and thrilling storytelling, Three Truths and a Lie is a fascinating chapter in D.D.’s storied career.

I didn't expect to enjoy this, since I'm not a fan of short stories, but I'd read all of the full-length DD Warren stories to date and decided to try it. Usually, I rate Lisa Gardner's work a four or in a couple of cases a five, but this was just an average read (in my opinion). The final answer to the students at the very end, was a bit weak but otherwise an entertaining read.

Good short story! It's a shame that Scribd does not have all Lisa Gardner's detective DD Warren series available in Audiobooks.

I don’t have a favourite part but it was a good short story to listen to while walking.

Detective Sergeant D. D. Warren is asked to do a presentation to a group of thriller writers about police procedure. When she turns and faces the room, D. D. abandons her plan and decides to tell a story about a recent, bizarre case and ask the group to figure out the three truths and a lie.

I’m not a fan of novellas but this one was pretty clever. It’s too short for me to provide more details without spoiling it for other readers but what I can share is I was just as engaged as the group in that conference room and enjoyed how she singled out some of my favorite, real life authors. I attempted to guess the answers, too, and the narrator brought a level of wit that made this fun.

Boston Homicide Detective D.D. Warren faces a terrifying challenge--standing in front of an audience of thriller writers and educating them about the realities of police work for an entire fifty-minute class. They are ravenous. They are bloodthirsty. Most police work is relatively dull.

So D.D. reaches deep into her bag of tricks, and pulls out one of her twistiest cases. It features drugs, prostitution, a dead body, and a severed leg.

A severed leg packed in dry ice.

And security cameras show no one entering or leaving the motel room until the night manager checked and found the body, and vomited. And then called the police.

This is a short story, and Gardner keeps it moving fast, and builds the tension with surprising twists and well-used detail. It may help a bit to have some prior familiarity with the larger series, but it's not vital. What's key here is the puzzle, and it's very well-done.

    Recommended.

    I bought this audiobook.

I do love Lisa Gardner’s novel, but didn’t care for this novella. Although it’s part of a series, it wouldn’t really matter if the reader hadn’t read previous ones, doesn’t follow a sequence. I just wasn’t engaged at all

D.D. Warren, a fictional cop character, speaks to a cop fiction writers convention. Does anyone see that as strange? it's a short story about a particular event that the author; apparently, could not make into a book, so she wrote a novella. Good work. I wondered if some of the characters in the cop writer audience were patterned after some of Gardener's colleagues? Fun read.

I liked this short mystery story more than I anticipated considering that I am unfamiliar with the series. So it was a pleasant surprise to find that it is set in Boston with some excursions into a suburb I know well!

Kirsten Potter did a good job narrating. I will have to try some more D.D. Warren books...

This is a short story featuring Detective D. D. Warren. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review. I don't normally enjoy short stories as they are too short! But, this one was great...grabbed me and I finished it quickly. Well worth the time.

3 Truths and a Lie by Lisa Gardner is a very highly recommended short story featuring Detective D.D. Warren. There are also two chapters from Gardner's upcoming book, Find Her, being published on February 9, 2016.

In this short story Detective D.D. Warren is facing a room full of mystery writers. She agreed to teach a fifty minute class at a Police Academy Writer's Conference on the realities of police work. Her husband, Alex, advises her that the group will like things bloody and gory. She decides that the class will be playing a game of three truths and a lie. The case she decides to share is one that features a seedy motel room, drugs, prostitution, and a severed leg. As Warren discloses the police procedures used to follow the clues to find out what really happened, she also asks the class of writers questions about the case and what steps they think the police should take next.

This is a great short story and a good introduction to Gardner and her character, Detective D.D. Warren. While it is a short story, it will hold your attention, beginning to end, and the case is fascinating. It's also nice to have the preview of Gardner's upcoming novel.

This was a short story about one of my favourite detectives, D.D. Warren. D.D. is on vacation with her husband Alex and his idea of fun is to be a guest speaker at a Police Academy Writer's Conference. He warns her that the bloodier and gorier the crime, the higher the interest level. Alex heads off to his blood spatter workshop and leaves D.D. on her own to present to a roomful of wishful and accomplished writers about "The Insider's Guide to Policing Procedures. She has only 50 minutes to teach them something and to hold their attention. She is extremely nervous, but once she starts, the crowd is on the edge of their seats. I loved the name dropping of Karin Slaughter and Kathy Reichs, another two of my favourite authors. D.D. tells them that she is going to tell them about one of her most interesting cases. She will tell them 3 truths and a lie and they need to figure out what the lie is. The case she describes is very peculiar and the crown thinks various things are lies because they are so far-fetched. It involves a hooker, drugs and a dismembered leg. This was a highly entertaining crime and her delivery of the facts kept me guessing.

This is just a small glimpse into the life of D.D. Warren, Boston detective extraordinaire. It adds another slice to her character. I thoroughly recommend that you read any and all of the D.D. Warren books or for that matter, any of Lisa Gardner's books. There is also a sneak peak at her next D.D. Warren novel coming out in February.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This did not effect my opinion of the book or the review itself. This novella features Gardner's popular detective, D.D. Warren, who has been roped into teaching a seminar at a mystery writer's conference. Concerned that her topic won't be interesting enough to keep a group of writers' attention, she spices it up by telling them about her most unusual recent case-that of the seedy hotel room, the amputated leg, and the hooker. She challenges the writers to decide what is the lie hidden in her story. What follows is a great locked room mystery, full of twists and turns and lots of bizarre details that all work in context. The reader is as enthralled as the group of writers, and as eager to learn the solution. This is a unique, fun, concept to frame a mystery in, and Gardner does it well. I would love to see this expanded into a whole book, maybe with Detective Warren teaching a multipart class with multiple case studies.

Three Truths and a Lie by Lisa Gardner is a wonderful mystery novella. Detective D.D. Warren has been asked to speak at the yearly Writers Police Academy in Wisconsin. She is to provide details on what a homicide detective really does during a day (or a case). The speech is titled Guide to Policing. Her husband, Alex Wilson talked her into coming to the conference. There is an old game called three truths and a lie. She is going to tell the details about a case and the class has to guess what the lie is (and we get to figure out who the killer is). Three Truths and a Lie is wonderful. I read it straight through. It is well-written and engaging. It has a great flow (pace). I thought the mystery was easy to solve but I loved it. The author provided great clues for the reader. I give Three Truths and a Lie 5 out of 5 stars. This was my first book by Lisa Gardner, but I will definitely be reading more of her books (especially about D.D. Warren). Lisa Gardner gives us an interesting character.I received a complimentary copy of Three Truths and a Lie from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Fictional detective meets real fiction authors and more in the latest addition to the D.D. Warren series by author Lisa Gardner, Three Truths And A Lie. The story starts off with D.D. stressing about meeting a group of fiction writers to discuss the daily routine of a homicide detective at a Writers' Police Academy in Wisconsin. Rather than delivering her original speech, D.D. opts to use the "three truths and a lie" game by telling the writers about a gory murder at a no-star hotel. The audience, filled with mystery, suspense, and thriller writers, must determine what the lie is in order to win. Will they guess correctly? Will you? Of course, you'll need to read Three Truths And A Lie for yourself to see if you can outwit this fictional detective. If you don't want to guess the lie, simply grab a copy of Three Truths And A Lie to read because it is a fast, often humorous, and engaging read. I'm looking forward to Ms. Gardner's next D.D. Warren installment, Find Her, coming soon.

A special thank you to Penguin/Dutton and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Lisa Gardner delivers a short fun crime novella, 3 TRUTHS AND A LIE (D.D. Warren #7.5) with a sneak peak at FIND HER—upcoming Feb 9. Boston Detective DD Warren's assignment is to speak in front of a bunch of crime thriller writers in a 50 minute Police Academy Writer's Conference class with some fun key note speakers and crime writer mentions of Karin Slaughter and Joseph Finder in attendance (which we all love—nice hair references), with a juicy witty case and a game of: 3 truths and a lie.Since most of class likes to write about detectives, this will be their chance to see if they can figure out the clues. DD keeps the inquisitive group entertained with clues coming from all directions. From a case in a seedy motel, illegal drugs, a hooker, a wealthy nicely dressed man, a creep manager, money, a dismembered leg, a tub of dry ice, blood, a duffel bag, and a severe case BIID. From latent prints, blood spatter, and favorite crime scenes with a bunch of aspiring novelists who are fascinated by police procedure and ensuring they get it correct. DD and hubby Alex, of course get to attend free and she has to survive this class where she gets to be the so-called expert, by providing day to day details of a homicide detective’s life. The whole truth and nothing but the truth. Witty, and humorous ---a race against time to figure out the clues of a whodunit crime scene. Gives you an ideal -- the difficulties of a detective and a crime thriller writer. Thinking outside the box. Looking forward to FIND HER, Feb 9 (starting next), where DD Warren is called to the scene of a murder and kidnapping. However, the same woman has been kidnapped before. Could Flora be a victim, or a vigilante? Just enough clever enticement to tide you over for the real deal.
