About this audiobook
The year is A.D. 922. A refined Arab courtier, representative of the powerful Caliph of Baghdad, encounters a party of Viking warriors who are journeying to the barbaric North. He is appalled by their Viking customs-the wanton sexuality of their pale, angular women, their disregard for cleanliness…their cold-blooded human sacrifices. But it is not until they reach the depths of the Northland that the courtier learns the horrifying and inescapable truth: he has been enlisted by these savage, inscrutable warriors to help combat a terror that plagues them-a monstrosity that emerges under cover of night to slaughter the Vikings and devour their flesh.…
Eaters of the Dead was adapted to the screen as The 13th Warrior, starring Antonio Banderas.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very well told story that keeps the action moving from start to finish!
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I just couldn’t get into the story. The characters failed to draw me in. The story was told by the protagonist in an almost clinical nature, as if observing gorillas in the wild. Despite being a shorter book, the story felt like it dragged. I gave up about 2/3 of the way through.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Greatly read audiobook, is a fast paced story, a good read, can finish in a day. The historical content that makes up the story is quite interesting as well.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great book. One of my fav. Movies. This was really a great presentation
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Book better than the movie.I love the factual retelling of it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is the second time I'm reading this book. The last time I read it was more than 25 years ago. This time, I read it after having read (again, actually listened to) Seamus Heaney's excellent translation of Beowulf. Knowing the context of Beowulf made the re-reading of this reimagining by Michael Crichton an absolute pleasure. I can honestly say I liked this version better than Heaney's poetic Beowulf. This is more "epic" in its scale and telling.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Not really Crichton's best but still entertaining.
This book was apparently a kind of experience or pet project, as follow up to a friendly argument the author had on how to bring classics to students. Crichton basically piggybacked on the work of a real world arabian chronicler to blend seamlessly facts and fiction and tell his version of Beowulf.
As a writing experiment it's interesting. However this is really a kind of "Sinuhe" set in the Viking age, not quite what I am looking for coming from the author of "Jurassic Park" and "Next". The narration was OK. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The story is an exceptional retelling of Beowulf. The change in perspective really delivers on the 'mortal' perspective.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I remember the film based on this book and so I thought I'd give it a go. I enjoyed the mix of fiction and history. Well worth a read.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It’s a wild work of fiction, if you dig a really raw, scary, early man type view, this is your looking glass.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book is not without its faults. Often times, it blazes past action sequences in a manner that would astonish Tolkien himself. The world building and the fish out of water story are worth the read.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Bottom of my is not ?? and tap tire and everything
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5It was just ok... not one of his best books out.
