About this audiobook

On an icy winter’s day in southwest Michigan, Grace Abbott wakes up as the survivor of a car crash. But she’s left with a traumatic brain injury and a terrifying reality: she can’t remember anything.

Left in the care of her sister, Grace returns to the family’s secluded old farmhouse to recover—but within an hour of her return, the police arrive. Grace’s boyfriend has been murdered. Without any memory, Grace has no alibi.

With suspicion weighing heavily on her and flashes of memory returning, Grace searches for clues to her past. But with every glimpse, her anxiety grows. There is something about the house, her family, her childhood…perhaps the accident isn’t the only reason she can’t remember. Are the dark recesses of her mind hiding something even more sinister and terrifying than she could ever imagine?

Is someone willing to kill again to hide the truth?

Broken Grace by E.C. Diskin 2015 Thomas Mercer 4 / 5Grace Abbott knows she shouldn be speeding on the icy roads of southwest Michigan, but the headlights behind her are rapidly approaching behind her.....Grace panics and runs off the road.Grace survives, but wakes up in a hospital with a traumatic brain injury and no memory of her past, and everyone seems reluctant to share with her any details of her past.Left in the care of her sister, Lisa, they return to a secluded farmhouse to recover-soon the police arrive and want to talk to Grace about the murder of her boyfriend. With no memories and no alibi, Grace falls under suspicion,Could Grace be guilty...is she capable of murder?Graces frustrations and memory flashes are masterfully done, the characters weave a intriguing mystique but the double twist ending was fantastic.Tense, fast-paced twister, a thriller that is exciting and riveting.

This book had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. I am usually able to figure out the "culprit" in books like these fairly early, but this one had me guessing for almost half of the book. By the time I narrowed in on a suspect, I was only partially right... and then I was still wrong. With a twist ending that contained an even bigger twist, this "whodunit" book had me staying up late at night and putting responsibilities on the back-burner. Definitely recommend this for anyone wanting a murder mystery that has you guessing up until the very end where you ultimately end up, wrong.

Early in the story, I though I had the main culprit figured out. No, I didn't know all the twists and turns, but I was fairly sure who was responsible for the murder. There was a twist at the end that I didn't see coming, and I like to be surprised.Grace has amnesia from a car wreck, and is trying to put the pieces of her confused life back together. I didn't much like Grace in the first few pages because of her nasty attitude toward an overly cheerful nurse who was just trying to help her. There is a good cop/bad cop team who wants to exonerate/convict her. And lots of villains, some more villainous than others. The storyline is fairly improbable. The writing isn't especially noteworthy, but then, it is not especially bad. I did question the author's use of something as coincidental when I believe she meant the opposite, but that is minor. There was one short section about animal torture, and I hate that. Kill off all the adults you want, but leave the animals alone. This is an fairly entertaining mystery when you don't want to tax your gray cells, and it was enjoyable to read, but it is not especially memorable.

    Illogical mishmash

Advice is often given to writers to write what they know. Writers should at least be versed in subjects they undertake. If, for example, you chose to have a pedophile as a character, you should at the very least have some sense of the characteristics of pedophiles. What perhaps bothered me most about Broken Grace was the lack of any sense of authority or command in the authors writer: not in her police details, not in her characters, and not in her understanding of pedophilia. This lack of command makes for a very weak book, and one lacking in a sense of truth. The final twist felt like a gotcha.
And whatever happened to the father in this story?
Lots of material, lots of interesting material, just Avery weak weave.

Broken Grace by E.C. Diskin is a book of suspense and mystery. Grace is fleeing in her car when she runs into a deer and totals her car. Eight days later Grace is being sent home with her sister, Lisa (to the family farm). Grace’s memory is gone. She does not remember anything about herself, life, family, or friends. Grace just gets home when two police officers show up at the house. Michael Cahill, Grace’s boyfriend (maybe ex-boyfriend, maybe fiancé) was murdered. The lead detective, Detective Bishop, believes Grace committed the crime and does not believe she has amnesia. Officer Justin Hackett, rookie assigned to the case, seems to know Grace (keeps it hidden from Det. Bishop) and believes Grace is innocent. Grace slowly starts regaining memories by looking at items in her family home and seeing a therapist. She also goes out and visits her workplace, as well as where she lived (despite doctor’s orders to rest and not drive). Grace is not liking what she is finding out about herself. But then she is only hearing one side of the story. When Grace starts remembering her past, it does not jive with the information she received from her sister, Lisa especially regarding her childhood. Grace needs to figure out what happened to Michael before she gets arrested. Why is Detective Bishop determined to pin the murder on Grace? What happened in his past that is affecting this case? Who really killed Michael Cahill? Can Grace stay ahead of the killer?Broken Grace was a very predictable mystery novel. The crimes were very easy to solve and the “twist” at the end was anticipated (I would tell you but then it would be a spoiler). I found Broken Grace to be very slow (like slogging through mud). A good book you just glide through it and you do not want the book to end. Broken Grace was not like that at all. I think the author tried to put too many elements into one book (amnesia, affairs, dead parents, bad childhood, murder, biased officers). The amnesia theme has been overdone this year in books (and I will avoid any more books with amnesia in it). I kept hoping for something unexpected, but I was disappointed. I give Broken Grace 2.5 out of 5 stars. I received a complimentary copy of Broken Grace from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The review and opinions expressed are my own.

Whilst Grace is fleeing from someone she is involved in a car accident and doesn't remember very much. She has flashbacks and bad feelings about certain things as she is trying to solve the puzzle which is her life. Who can she rely on, who can she trust? It was easy to read with a few exciting parts but it was just a fairly average book which although kept me entertained wasn't one of those books you just can't bear to put down. Something to relax with on holiday would be my thought.

Broken Grace reminded me of a couple of other books I have read this year:
woman (Grace) wakes up in hospital after a car accident suffering from a traumatic brain injury and total loss of memory.
Her only remaining family is her sister, so she is discharged into said sister's care staying in a remote house that somehow makes her feel uncomfortable.
Her boyfriend is found murdered. Enter a rookie cop and his seasoned partner.
What happened? What's real? Who's hiding what? Who can be trusted?
Some of the plot was predictable and a bit clichéd, and a third through the book I thought I had figured it all out, but I hadn't. Not all, anyway. It is definitely worth sticking with this because the final reveal made it worthwhile. Very fitting title. The writing was concise, and I enjoyed following the rookie cop's POV as well as Grace's. On the whole, an enjoyable psychological mystery / police procedural but nothing outstanding.
