About this audiobook
We all know that the best way to study a foreign language is to go to a country where it's spoken, but can the same immersion method be applied to history? How do interactions with antique objects influence perceptions of the modern world?
From Victorian beauty regimes to nineteenth-century bicycles, custard recipes to taxidermy experiments, oil lamps to an ice box, Sarah and Gabriel Chrisman decided to explore nineteenth-century culture and technologies from the inside out. Even the deepest aspects of their lives became affected, and the more immersed they became in the late Victorian era, the more aware they grew of its legacies permeating the twenty-first century.
In her first book, Victorian Secrets, Chrisman recalled the first year she spent wearing a Victorian corset 24/7. In This Victorian Life, Chrisman picks up where Secrets left off and documents her complete shift into living as though she were in the nineteenth century.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This wonderful book was a mixture of fascinating history, anthropological study, and motivation to follow your dreams.
The author looks at living as though in the Victorian era as an study of another culture and I learned so many fascinating bits from history. I also found the bravery of the author and her husband to follow their dream and live differently from others as truly inspiring. Even if someone’s dream isn’t to live as though in the past, they can apply the determination and principles in this book to follow their own path.
I am totally entertained by the stories and completely inspired :)1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Though the content of the book is intriguing, the audio of the chapters is constently cut short often in the middle of sentences.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I struggle with why an intelligent couple should decide to live like a Victorian one right down to quill pens and corsets but it makes an entertaining read and is a lighthearted way of increasing your knowledge of the era.
