Characters are unlikeable living in a fantastical world. The protagonist Molly Pink is someone if real you'd run from.

Cute cozy mystery, using crocheting and knitting as center. You had interesting characters who kept the story going and made you laugh at times.

Betty Hechtman weaves together an intriguing mystery with relatable characters and puzzle that keeps you guessing. All the suspects and still a surprise ending. I really enjoyed this book. It combines the crochet into being an integral part of the plot that is unique. This is the first book of the series and I can't wait to read more.

Molly Pink is a widow who works at a bookstore managing events, and is delivering a package to Ellen Sheridan. But when she arrives at Ellen's home, the woman's dead. Then a policeman enters the home, she's put in handcuffs, and now she's a suspect in the murder. So Molly does the only thing she can do -- try to find a killer who wants to make her the next victim. This is the first book in the Crochet Mysteries and I really wanted to like it. Partly because there are so many knitting mysteries out there but very few ones centered on crochet. Unfortunately, it took a turn almost from the beginning that made me realize this is not going to be put on my 'favorites' list any time soon. The detective heading the case -- Detective Heather Gilmore is interested in Molly's boyfriend, Detective Barry Greenberg, even though Greenberg only has eyes for Molly. So now we have the 'evil nemesis' in the form of Heather. I absolutely detest the 'evil nemesis' in books. It's not necessary to tell the story; it's not essential to have someone who hates the protagonist and wants to do them harm. And, I'm going to add: if Detective Greenberg removed himself from the case because he's Molly's boyfriend (which is patently ridiculous because the neighbor who called the police called them because they saw her enter the home, so they know what time she arrived -- which was far too late to have killed Ellen, so she would be eliminated immediately and he could stay on the case); then Heather should have removed herself because she hates Molly. End of discussion. Then, I rather skimmed the rest of the book because of what I mentioned above, and discovered my other pet peeve: we're looking at a possible love triangle. If there's anything I hate more than the evil nemesis, it's the dreaded love triangle. Let's face it: if it were a man and he was waffling between two women, you'd think he was a dog, so why is it okay for a woman to waffle between two men? Um, no. I'm not interested in this. So, saying everything I've said, I will be fair and take a look at the second in the series, but if we still have Heather mooning over Barry, and the love triangle hanging around, I will be done with this series. Pity. I do love crochet.

Molly Pink, a widow, has two grown sons and a job at a book store. She has a special friend, a detective who is divorced and has a teenage son. Molly and her best friend join a crochet group that is making an afghan for charity, even though they just learned how to crochet the night before joining the group. This should be a rich, full life for anyone, but somehow, Molly manages to enrich it. She finds a murder victim, an acquaintance, and immediately becomes a person of interest in the crime. She barely stays one step ahead of major trouble in trying to clear her name. There is also trouble in the romance department, and a handsome lawyer may some addition interest to that problem. This debut novel in this series has a lot going for it, including delightful characters in a cozy setting.

Not a bad first effort, although a little rocky in places. The killer surprised me, which is always a nice way to end a mystery. I think she might have tried to have too many things going on at once, it was a very "busy" mystery, what with book signings, bookstore events, crocheting, romances, friendships, children, boyfriends and of course a couple of murders. I'll probably read her next book but it won't be an automatic read.

This feels a little formulaic in the way that themed mysteries often do, but it's still a fun read! I got a kick out of the rant about crochet vs knitting, and it kind of made me wish I had a crochet club to hang out with for the friendship and the gossip.

This is the first book in the Crochet Mystery series- a typical American `cosy' mystery series with fun characters who you can really get to know and a plot that makes for light-hearted reading. This book introduces Molly Pink, a widowed bookstore worker who stumbles across a woman's body when she returns to her a crochet bag that has been left behind in the store. Police immediately suspect Molly of doing the nasty deed- and she has a motive- but Molly decides to do a little investigating of her own...The plots of these cosy mystery books are pretty formulaic when you get down to it, but it's nice that some of them introduce a `crafty' angle or contain recipes. To be honest, you don't have to be a fan of crochet to like this book (I can't do it myself) but it might encourage you to give it a try! This book also introduces the crochet group `The Tarzana Hookers' which Molly decides to join for her first foray into crocheting. I'm looking forward to getting to know some of them better when I pick up book 2 of this fun little series- that's another good thing about these books: you really get to know the characters as each series progresses. This book has great character development and a nice quick plot, which would make it ideal to curl up with if you have half an hour to spare, or want something to read whilst commuting- you can dip in and out of it at whim and still keep up with what's going on. I personally enjoy reading these in one sitting, especially at the moment. They're the ultimate in comfort reading (and real light relief after some heavier novels)!**My personal recommendations for other cosy crafty mystery series if you like this one are `The Knitting Mysteries' by Maggie Sefton and the `Needlecraft Mystery Series' by Monica Ferris.** *This review also appears on Amazon.co.uk*

The Crochet Mystery series has been in my TBR for quite a few months now. I love to crochet and the idea about a murder mystery series set around a group of crocheters tickles my crafty heart. The first book in the series is HOOKED ON MURDER, and it sees bookstore event co-ordinator, Molly Pink, in the hot seat after she is suspected of murdering Ellen Sheridan, the leader of the crochet group. Now it's up to Molly, with her trusty sidekick in the form of best friend Dinah, to try to solve the crime before she gets sent away to jail for good! HOOKED ON MURDER is everything that I love about series debuts. It sets up a great cast of characters (not too many so that I'm constantly losing track of all the characters, and not too few that I feel like something is missing, just the right amount!), with a murder practically on the first page, and lots of crafty goodness. I really enjoyed Molly as the amateur sleuth. She's feisty and independent and is trying to get her life back on track after her husband passed away. She's determined to solve the crime and clear her name, and even uses a self-help how-to-be-a-investigator type of book to help her along the way! I've been crocheting for about 15+ years, and I liked the way Betty Hechtman included the crocheting stitches as part of the book. It was fun watching Molly and Dinah learn how to crochet, and also to see the rivalry between crocheters and knitters. I found HOOKED ON MURDER to be a fantastic read. It is well and truly worthy of 5 stars rating, and a definitely must-add to any cozy mystery readers library.

It took me a couple of chapters to really enjoy hanging with Molly and the crochet peeps, but once I got to chapter 3, I was in there. Molly has a legitimate reason for gettng involved in the murder solving. She was found over the dead body, the victim bought out Molly's business after the death of Molly's husband, the victim's partner, and the detective in charge of the case has the hots for Molly's boyfriend, another police detective.....keeping up? Yeah, that was my problem at first. A whole bunch of backstory with a whole bunch of characters to learn. Once I got the hang of everyone and everything, it was all good and I highly enjoyed the rest of the book. Molly learning to crochet was fun to watch and I admired her backbone sticking up for herself against her bossy oldest son and the take charge boyfriend. Nice characters to enjoy and some well written characters with some issues that I wanted to pop upside the cranium. I started the book not sure I wanted to finish it and by the end of the story, I had the second in the series, DEAD MEN DON'T CROCHET, on the WWBL.Four crocheting is the next big thing beans.....

Definitely a light and easy read. I enjoyed the main character and the novelty of having crochet mixed with caffeine, books, and murder. The digital version had many errors which were slightly annoying but always understandable.

Molly Pink is a widow trying to put her life back together after her husband's unexpected death. She's got a job as an event coordinator for a local bookstore. The bookstore is sponsoring an auction of a hand crocheted afghan when disaster strikes - the leader of the Tarzana Hookers (who are making the afghan) is found dead in her home by Molly. Before she can call for help., the [police arrive and find her with the body. Fortunately, Molly's boyfriend, (a police detective) is able to convince the officer in charge that Molly is not involved. However, Detective Heather Gilmore has the hots for Greenberg so she places Molly at the too of her suspects list. With a Ellen dead, the Hookers are runny short of crocheters so Molly and her friend Dinah volunteer to help even though they are only beginning crocheters. As they learn more and more about the members of the group, Molly and Dinah work to figure out who killed Ellen. The book lack a bit in the character development area and some of the clues were a bit vague, but overall it was an enjoyable cozy mystery. I'm hoping that the next in the series will improve.

Molly Pink has been recently hired as the event coordinator for a bookstore in the Valley area near Los Angeles. There's a crochet group meeting in the store working on a charity project. When the group's leader turns up dead and Molly is found over the dead body, she becomes suspect number 1 for the officer in charge of the investigation. Molly and her friend take up crochet to help relieve some of the stress. Can Molly clear her own name before she lands in jail? One thing I liked is that Molly's boyfriend removed himself from the investigation when she was found at the scene of the crime. That seems to be more in keeping with expected police procedure than some cozy mysteries where a husband or boyfriend continues the investigation when the main character is involved. As with any new series, there were a lot of new characters to get to know, and I'm not sure that I really liked most of these characters. This series, because of its setting, featured a lot of "celebrities." I really think I would have preferred a less urban setting for this series and definitely one away from Hollywood. Some of the characters began to grow on me toward the end of the book. I liked the series well enough to give the next installment a try.Update: One thing I failed to mention which drove me crazy was that the editing of this book was terrible from a formatting perspective. Many (dare I say, most) of the chapters had been centered vertically so that the final page of the chapter was centered (including the headers) instead of top-aligned. I can't believe that Berkley allowed this book to go to the printer with such obvious formatting errors.

This was a very enjoyable cozy mystery for me. I liked the main character in spite of her unlikely name of Molly Pink. I just didn't really know that book stores hired "Event Coordinators." I am originally from Southern California, so the Valley locale was fairly familiar to me. Also, I do crochet and there was a lot of crochet in the book, more than I had expected, and I loved it. I can see, though, that this might be a drawback to someone who is not involved or interested in getting involved in the craft. In this book, the first in the series, Molly is a crochet novice, but she is confidently crocheting granny squares by the end of the novel. I thought the mystery itself was average, but I look forward to reading more in the series.
