The three stars I have given this book are purely for the stories it includes, all of which are fine Sherlock Holmes stories (although at least one appears to have been chosen more for its connection to the BBC series Sherlock than for its merits). However, the cover and marketing of this book are deceptive. "Selected and introduced by Mark Gatiss & Steven Moffat" suggested to me that there would be an introduction to each story, an overall introduction, or both, written by the men behind Sherlock. Both men are longtime admirers of the Holmes stories, and I was looking forward to seeing what they had to say.
I was completely disappointed. The "introductions" to the stories consist of a few lines apiece, on the order of, "A dose of country air for Holmes and Watson. A missing racehorse and one of the most famous and pleasing quotations in the canon (the other dog one!)." No insight at all into either the stories or the selectors.
If you want to give the original Sherlock Holmes stories a try, go ahead, but you can find them free on the Internet or in any number of lovely editions, some illustrated, that will cost you much, much less while offering all of the stories, not just a selection of 19.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The acting voices were spot on for Conan Doyle canon Sherlock. It was nicely paced-not too fast.
