About this audiobook

When girl meets Duke, their marriage breaks all the rules…

Since his return from war, the Duke of Ashbury’s to-do list has been short and anything but sweet: brooding, glowering, menacing London ne’er-do-wells by night. Now there’s a new item on the list. He needs an heir—which means he needs a wife. When Emma Gladstone, a vicar’s daughter turned seamstress, appears in his library wearing a wedding gown, he decides on the spot that she’ll do.

His terms are simple:

- They will be husband and wife by night only.

- No lights, no kissing.

- No questions about his battle scars.

- Last, and most importantly… Once she’s pregnant with his heir, they need never share a bed again.

But Emma is no pushover. She has a few rules of her own:

- They will have dinner together every evening.

- With conversation.

- And unlimited teasing.

- Last, and most importantly… Once she’s seen the man beneath the scars, he can’t stop her from falling in love…

Have always enjoyed Tessa Dare, this story surpassed all the rest. Laugh out loud funny made even better by the narrator whose pauses, delivery and different voices for each character brought the story to life.

Wholesome characters and witty writing, I found the approach quite modern compared to how stiff those times were, quite refreshing

I had a lot of fun with this Beauty and the Beast inspired story. It was hilarious, on the low side of angst and quite romantic.
Abd it had some of my favorite tropes: grumpy sunshine, marriage of convenience, protective hero.
I probably eon't remember this book in the future but it is great re-read material.

Everything about this is perfection. The story, the dialogue, the arc, lovely! MJW is always on point and so in tuned with the characters it’s uncanny. Great read/listen all around.

I started this book by listing to an audio version. Audio versions usually aren’t my thing. The narrators can make or break a book for me. This narrator was awesome. I truly enjoyed listening to this book, which is a rarity for me. I enjoyed the characters and the plot. Ashbury was scarred and emotionally destroyed but not so much that I was depressed over it or pitied him. His sense of humor was what I really enjoyed. That and when the chips were down and he was worried for Emma he put all his insecurities aside to go after her. Then there’s Emma. She was a breath of fresh air. Not some insipid, prudish debutante that didn’t have a backbone. She was the exact opposite. Strong, resourceful, loving and *gasp* actually enjoyed sex. Overall this was a great read.

I can't express enough the enjoyment I gained from listening to this novel. I wasn't crazy about the voice that the Duke was given, kind of sounded like an old toad. The novel itself was a hoot. Tessa Dare did a fantastic job of bringing comedy into the novel from start to finish. I especially enjoyed the fact that the novel had substance. I love a good steamy sex scene, but I hate when every other page in a romance novel is about sex. The heroin is strong and knows her mind and yet is smart enough to know when to let him lead.....just love it

Audio-book: Narrator – Mary Jane Wells

Oh my gosh! This narrator completely nailed this audio in every form and fashion. This is one of the times that listening to the book was so much better than reading it could be. Mainly because when she does the hero’s role, she adds such amazing life and animation to him that is not projected in just the words alone. She gives a unique voice to Ashbury and I fell totally in love with him. She does the same with Emma as well, but Ash’s personality really shone through in her performance of him. It was almost like listening to a movie except so much better!

I loved this book so much! I wasn’t expecting to which made it all the more thrilling. This couple were perfect together with their give and take/push and pull. Their quirky personalities that meshed just right added to my enjoyment. They had a few heavy conflicts to overcome but it never felt overly angsty. The steam factor was off the chart and listening to it was blush inducing. I loved the way Ash slowly gave way to Emma and allowed all his rules to be broken. Mostly, I loved that Emma didn’t see a broken disfigured man, but a man she respected and loved.

So glad I chose this one to spend time with!

I am having trouble verbalizing or writing my feelings about this book... I have been blown away by this book entirely. I have been on this romance journey all month trying to find something I wouldn't feel uncomfortable reading and wouldn't roll my eyes at endlessly since I tend to be too much of a realist, hello I am a virgo. However this book completely swept me away into it's depths and I never wanted to leave.

Emma and Ash have such a fun connection with great banter and I couldn't stop smiling and laughing at the atmosphere it created. I enjoyed myself every moment reading their story and I think Emma is going to be on my list of favorite book characters ever. She's so driven and has such an open heart. She is flawed and she admits that and I love that in a character.

Overall this book greatly exceeded my expectations in the best ways and I am so happy to have found one more 5 star read before the end of December.

If you like enemies to lovers, I guess you’ll like this.

The man is grouchy most of the book. And it’s always a woman’s duty to show a man his worth. Sure, it’s slightly romantic, but even the witty banter was boring and always ending in the man being a crappy pants. And he barely did anything to win her over. And he was still a grouch after he fell in love with her. I feel bad for her.

This to me came off with Beauty and the Beast vibes along with a marriage trope thrown in. It had witty banter and two characters who both needed to heal from the past and found the healing in each other.
