About this audiobook
Milkman Dead was born shortly after a neighborhood eccentric hurled himself off a rooftop in a vain attempt at flight. For the rest of his life he, too, will be trying to fly. With this brilliantly imagined novel, Toni Morrison transfigures the coming-of-age story as audaciously as Saul Bellow or Gabriel García Márquez. As she follows Milkman from his rustbelt city to the place of his family's origins, Morrison introduces an entire cast of strivers and seeresses, liars and assassins, the inhabitants of a fully realized black world.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Exquisite. Beautiful. Toni Morrison reads this novel herself. It is worth listening to, for that reason only. She has true insight.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A wonderful book by a talented writer. Morrison’s writing is so good, it doesn’t try to ‘be’ anything. There’s no formula and nothing feels contrived. It’s such a breath of fresh air and somewhat of a rarity in modern literature. Just a fantastic story. And her narration is so beautiful. I could listen forever.
