About this audiobook

Within every community, toxic people can be found hiding in families, couples, companies, and places of worship. The cryptic nature of psychological abuse involves repetitious mind games played by one individual or a group of people.

Psychological abuse leaves no bruises. There are no broken bones. There are no holes in the walls. The bruises, brokenness, and holes are held tightly within the target of the abuse.

This book has been very helpful. I am in the 'education' stage of recovery from covert emotional abuse. Because I dealt with the abuse for 50 years I intend to move on through the phases but never stop learning. It is too easy to fall back into old habits if I am not continually learning.

I guess I'm in the minority here, I just didn't like this book very much. I found it long winded and not very well written. And also, this cartoonish "villain" depiction of the abuser is a bit old - we know that they suffer attachment injuries and often really DO NOT have any conscious notion of what they're doing. I don't think demonizing the abuser is very helpful in moving forward. They're damaged people who damage people. We need to steer of clear of them if they're strangers and get very solid boundaries and good trauma therapy if they are our relatives. The wounds can be life crippling and all the available resources should be focused on healing the victim with as little time spent comprehending (falsely, in this case) the pathology of the abuser. Good luck to everyone seeking healing and help.

I thought this would be helpful when I started but to constantly paint all psychological abusers as toxic people who CHOOSE to harm and that they could have been nice despite their own troubled upbringing is not only negative but false. It requires years of therapy to even be aware of that they are abusive and often they have in their mind tried to help, not harm. There are biological factors to developing personality disorders, tho environment plays an important role.
This book might be nice to hear as a victim of abuse, but seeing the abuser as a villan will not help anyone, especially not mental health care to help individuals get better.
