Tom Sawyer é um menino traquina que reside numa pequena aldeia chamada S. Petersburg no estado de Ilinois nos EUA, em finais do século XIX.
Ainda bebê os seus pais morreram, tendo ficado a morar com a tia Polly, mais o seu irmão Sid e a prima Maria. Ser pirata e descobrir tesouros é o seu sonho. Para Tom a vida seria sempre uma aventura, a coisa que mais detesta é a de ter que ir à escola, de andar de sapatos e ao Domingo ter de ir à missa.
Quem não vai nesta cantiga é o professor, que está constantemente a repreender Tom com severos castigos, mesmo sem este ter culpa. Tom faz tudo para conquistar o coração da sua amada, a Becky Tatcher, que também sente um fraquinho por ele.

Mark Twain, who was born Samuel L. Clemens in Missouri in 1835, wrote some of the most enduring works of literature in the English language, including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc was his last completed book—and, by his own estimate, his best. Its acquisition by Harper & Brothers allowed Twain to stave off bankruptcy. He died in 1910.
