About this audiobook

Part autobiography, part philosophical inquiry, part sacred quest—The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck for the spiritual seeker—a hilarious, profound, and enlightening romp around the fertile mind of stand-out stand-up comedian, host of the hugely successful podcast You Made it Weird, and star of HBO’s Crashing, Pete Holmes

Growing up as evangelical Christian outside Boston, Pete Holmes was taught that drugs, alcohol, and pre-marital sex were serious transgressions. Faithful to the tenets of his faith, Pete did not swear, did not drink, did not smoke, and did not fornicate. He did devote himself to one woman, married her, and moved to the country to start a simple life and build a family. Then the wife he pledged himself to cheated on him very publicly. Thanks for nothing, God.

When his attempt at a picture-perfect life failed, Pete was forced to re-examine his beliefs. But neither atheism, Christianity, nor copious bottles of Yellow Tail led to enlightenment. Longing for a model of faith that served him and his newfound uncertainties about the universe—you know, the little things—the scorned believer embarked on a soul-seeking journey that has become the foundation of his work today. Comedy Sex God is his funny, thoughtful, straight-from-the-heart mediation on life, creativity, love, God, and the things that matter to him—and to us all.

Pete ponders the most valuable spiritual truths he’s picked up in his post-religion life and shares a few personal stories—of professional success, failure, and the pain in his balls. Comedy Sex God is celebration of losing something to find something else—a void that became a door to spiritual exploration—a glorious journey into the mind-blowing unknown that never would have begun if your wife hadn’t cheated with a guy named Rocco.

This is incredible. As someone who discovered Pete through the show Crashing, and then went back through a number of his podcasts, this book filled in the gaps for me that I'd only seen glimpses of in his work. For anyone who practiced faith and hit any number of life's brick walls, this book is incredibly therapeutic. He uses his own biography as an analogy for all of life's struggles, and he shows how he found peace in the philosophy of Ram Dass. He covers his experience with all three words of the title, Comedy (how he broke in), Sex (losing his virginity - twice), and God (from Evangelical to some kind of Hippie). Knowing that Crashing has come to an end, we can consider this the series finale.
    Highly recommended.

So much to love about this memoir! Pete Holmes expresses the elemental truths of his story and search in accessible language. He takes up his own brokenness and explores it with wit and kindness and courage. His account of his journey is heart-warming and hopeful. Thank you for putting into words the thoughts and botheration that has been my own experience.

I'm a fan of Pete Holmes' comedy so I wanted to give this a shot. Holmes reads the book to you, so you get an extra layer of information when he's going through stories. If you're a fan of stand up comedy, this is great. Hearing Pete's spiritual quest was also very interesting. When you're trying to figure out what life is all about, it can be jarring. I highly recommend this book.

I seriously love Pete Holmes. His very existence keeps me leveled. His comedy. His uniqueness. His spiritual enlightenment that I never even was aware of until finding him. I learn things from him constantly. Everything he does makes
MY life better. And to read the story of his life made it much more than it was.
I think this guy is the only celebrity i would ever feel comfortable to sit and speak with for hours.

Stay with us Pete. Im in for the long haul.

Congrats on your new baby and the book. Its wonderful just as everything else you say and do.

All I was expecting a few laughter... What I found was profound thoughts about human experience and spirituality that gave me such an awe. I’m so thankful to Pete Holmes to give me this dense experience. To show me shame, guilt, and all the ‘so called negative emotions’ are just a part of life, and love is all there is. To me he is a great comedian for sure, but more than that he is a great human being. Do yourself a favor and just press play. Let him take you to a life changing journey.

This book is couples therapy for the ego and awareness. I got way more out of this than I expected and am confident this will not be my only read of it. Thank you Pete and all who inspired you.

I enjoyed it thoroughly as a 30-something who grew up Catholic, became born again Christian, married with kids, and now hitting a mess of my own codependency, marriage problems, career disillusionment, therapy, psychedelics, and nostalgia for my younger self.

I was looking for a book of comedy and the first half was pretty funny. The second half was about spiritualism in the swami style.

Great book! Pete does a great job narrating the stories he had. It has its funny moments, but this is much more than a comedy book. I have already recommended this book to several people before I even finished it.

This booking is stunning, honest and warm. This book spoke so closely to my own experience of god and sex and life that it was almost eerie. Pete Holmes is honestly one of the purest souls out there and this book makes you feel like he is your close personal friend. Bravo to this book xx

Way better than I expected. I obviously expected and got funny, but didn’t see the disarming honesty and deep insight coming. Nicely and courageously done!

nonfiction /memoir (comedian loses faith but regains spirituality)
funny, but he does go on a bit about the spirituality, as these things tend to do.

I love a good spiritual memoir, though in fairness I tend to skew heavily toward the female teacher. Pete Holmes, however, completely won me over in this funny and heartfelt account of his journey from evangelical Christian to spiritual seeker. I laughed, I teared up, I wrote down quotes. Definitely a standout of the year for me.

Engaging and funny memoir that morphs quite beautifully into an exploration of spirit. Highly recommend.Stumbled onto the HBO show "Crashing" and became quite curious about Pete Holmes and where he might be coming from, philosophically / theologically / spiritually. So then discovered this recently released book and it answered all my questions and sparked all new curiosities! I especially appreciated his forthright description about escaping the traps of fundamentalism / evangelism.
