Devlin Markham, the notorious "Devil Duke" of Huntington, needs a woman. And not just any woman. If he can't woo one of the most eccentric bluestockings of the Ton within the month, he can kiss his hard-earned fortune goodbye. But he's always thought love a wasted emotion and marriage an inconvenience at best. And oddly enough, Lady Sophie Wolcott seems unmoved by his charm . . .

When Sophie learns her beloved orphanage is in imminent danger, she will do anything to save it. Even marry a ruthless rake who takes what he wants in business and pleasure. A man who's everything she's always feared most-but whom she reluctantly begins yearning for.

Then Sophie becomes the target of a killer lurking from the dark shadows of Devlin's past. And they find not only their lives in jeopardy but their very hearts.

I cannot believe how much I enjoyed this book. The villain died too swiftly but all good

3.5 stars rounded up. I enjoyed this and I stayed up a little later than usual so I could finish it. But it also had a loose thread or two that was never explained/picked back up, and a few times (especially near the end) where the characters made dumb choices not because it made sense or seemed likely, but because they were being arranged for further plot events. The cynical part of me wanted to raise a brow and be like 'but of course you did...'. I suppose that's my #1 complaint really, the plot wasn't bad, I could just really see the author pulling the strings, and that distracted me from the story. Also the side characters could have used more dimension. And when an orphanage is so integral to the plot I expect it to actually play a roll, this one was used as the reason for one major decision and then might as well not have existed. Overall though, I was entertained. This is my first book by this author and I look forward to trying another (I do hope these issues improve though, if they continue in book after book then I'll likely start rounding down rather than up).

The story starts with Sophie wanting to spy on the object of her infatuation and climbs a tree and while watching him give an engagement ring to someone else, the Devlin, the Devilish Duke, is rendezvousing with a married woman on a bench under the same tree. The tree branch gives way and Sophie falls to the ground at Devlin’s feet. Some bantering and promises not to reveal what each were doing at the tree. A year goes by and the Duke needs a wife and thinks of Sophie who is always in need of funds for her orphanage charity. A bargain is struck and then there are murders and Devlin is a suspect.

Bedeviled! Our first, and Devlin Markham, the infamous “Devil Duke” of Huntington's first introduction to Lady Sophie Wolcott is rather intriguing! After all how many debutantes land at your feet, from a branch overhead, just as about your pleasant interlude with a dashing wife (someone else's of course) was well underway. And the pace doesn't let up from here! Twelve months later, Huntington finds himself under royal decree to marry and Sophie springs to mind. Sophie finds herself in rather a tough place. The orphanage she supports is under threat and it seems "the Devil Duke" might have an answer? Or is this an opportunistic move on the Duke"s part?Strong main characters, an interesting plot and quite a few laughs, amongst the heated romantic interludes makes this an enjoyable read.A NetGalley ARC
