About this audiobook
When you think of a witch, what do you picture? Pointy black hat, maybe a broomstick. But witches in various guises have been with us for millennia. In Waking the Witch, Pam Grossman explores the impact of the world’s most magical icon. From the idea of the femme fatale in league with the devil to the bewitching pop culture archetypes in Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Harry Potter; from the spooky ladies in fairy tales to the rise of contemporary witchcraft, witches reflect the power and potential of women.
Part cultural analysis, part memoir, Waking the Witch traces the author’s own journey on the path to witchcraft, and how this has helped her find self-empowerment and purpose. It celebrates witches past, present, and future, and reveals the critical role they have played—and will continue to play—in the world as we know it.
“Deftly illuminating the past while beckoning us towards the future, Waking the Witch has all the makings of a feminist classic. Wise, relatable, and real, Pam Grossman is the witch we need for our times” (Ami McKay, author of The Witches of New York).

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book was so amazing! From history to current times and cultures, Pam Grossman did a fantastic job navigating the witch and how she affects us all. Definitely the best witchy book I’ve read so far!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Interesting. More of a history lesson. Explained a lot of movies. If you're looking for a book on witch history, then this book is for you. If you're looking for a book to learn about witchcraft and use it in your daily life, this is not the book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5One of my favorite audiobooks ever. Content was just as great as the production. Pam is a wonderful writer and performer. Highly recommend.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Really great book to listen to if you’ve ever been curious about your witchy side. The pop culture chapters seemed a little long but the rest of the book found a much deeper and prescient message that I really appreciated. Empowering and feminist in its thought; I loved it!!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I love it so much. It is so informative and thoughtful!!!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5this was a super easy read! non-fiction, a brief and sprawling history of witches and feminism. i really enjoyed some chapters more than others, but overall it was really readable.
a lot of people were like "she mentions trump too often" like, i don't really think so? i thought it was pretty relevant. although i really did wish a lot of the artists mentioned had a photograph of their work because i didn't necessarily have time to google each artist while reading.
i found a lot of her insights pretty interesting. was it eye-opening? not particularly. was it affirming? yah. the nicest part about this is i do have lots of films, pop culture things and historical names to look up after finishing this.
was it the strongest book in the world? no. was i looking for that? no. i enjoyed this a lot.
